This crochet baby blanket makes the perfect handmade gift for babies!  Whip up one of these quick and cozy crochet baby blankets for the little ones and some crochet baby booties! Working with this chunky yarn makes it super fast, and you’ll want to make a one for yourself in a larger size once you notice how soft and warm it feels!

The pattern is really easy once you get the hang of it, and I think the sweet shell stitch gives the blanket a little extra detail that I love. This is easy enough for beginners, so don’t shy away from this pattern if you’re new to crochet.

I love how modern it looks in a solid color. This hue is perfect for a baby boy or a baby girl – but by all means, go with whatever color you like! Some of the chunkier yarns come in gorgeous variegated colors, too, so you can create a blanket in a whole rainbow of happy colors for baby.

  • Start by making a chain of 81 stitches.
  • ROW 1 – 1 single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook. 1 single crochet in each chain to the end.
  • ROW 2 – Chain 1 {don’t count it as a stitch}, 1 single crochet in the first stitch, *skip 3 stitches, 5 double crochet in the next stitch to create a shell, skip 3 stitches, 1 single crochet in the next stitch…repeat from the * to the end of the row.
  • ROW 3 – Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 1 dc in the first st. *ch 2 and skip over 2dc. Work 1 sc in next dc st then ch 2. Work 2 dc in next sc* repeat steps between * until the end of the row. You will end the row with 2 dc in the last stitch.
  • ROW 4 – Ch 1, 1 sc in the space between the 2 dc. *Skip over the ch 2 and work 5 dc in sc st, 1 sc in the space between the 2 dc* repeat steps between * until the end of the row.
  • Repeat rows 3 & 4 until you reach the desired length for your blanket. About 29 inches is a good size.
  • When you are happy with the size, cut your yarn to leave about 6 inches loose. Thread your tapestry needle with the yarn end and weave it into your blanket. You may need to do the same where you changed skeins of yarn in the middle of your blanket as well.

What size should a crochet baby blanket be?

There are many different sizes of baby blankets. The finished size of the crochet baby blanket pattern above is about 29 inches square. If you’ve done crochet before, you know how easy it is to modify a pattern: just chain more stitches at the beginning, or add more rows as you reach the end if you’d like to make your blanket a little bit larger than what’s called for here.

Keep in mind that the pattern calls for a particular type of yarn, and if you’re thinking of substituting a different type, the weight of the yarn and size of your hook will change the size of your stitches – and may require more or less yarn.

Blanket sizes are approximate and will vary, but in general, these are basic baby blanket sizes:

  • Receiving Blanket

This is a medium-sized blanket about 30 inches square. If you prefer a rectangular shape for the blanket go for 30″ x 34″.

  • Crib Blanket

A rectangularly shaped blanket measuring around 40 inches by 60 inches.

  • Preemie Blanket

These baby blankets perfect for small babies are often small squares. The preemie blanket sizes range from 15 inches x 15 inches to 24 inches x 24 inches.

  • Stroller Blanket

Stroller blankets are the most consistent in size when it comes to baby blankets. Stroller blanket size is nearly always 30 inches x 36 inches.

What is the best yarn for baby blankets?

The best yarn for baby blankets must be machine washable as the blanket will need to be washed many times. Babies put everything in their mouths, so avoid yard that sheds or has embellishments woven in the yarn that might come off.

And, of course, the snuggle factor has to be taken into consideration. Softness is key. Babies have super sensitive skin, so you’ll want to choose a yarn that has a lasting softness even after extensive washing and use.

This crochet baby blanket uses Wool-Ease by Lion Brand. It is a 4-ply worsted-weight yarn that is appreciated for its versatility and value. It has the feel, warmth, and softness of wool – especially in a natural color like the wheat tone used in this pattern – combined with the easy care of acrylic and can be machine washed and dried. The thick and quick yarn is super bulky and is perfect for beginners looking for a quick project.
