Factors Affecting the Number of Peanuts That Fit in a Mason Jar

The peanuts being counted

Whether or not the peanuts are shelled can make a huge difference. To be precise, we used unshelled, roasted peanuts.

Green peanuts or raw peanuts are larger than roasted peanuts because they still contain a lot of moisture.

It also matters how close the peanuts get to the top of the jar. We completely filled our jar to the rim with peanuts.

What are peanuts?

A peanut is a legume, also known as groundnuts or goobers. Peanuts are native to South America and were first cultivated in Peru and Bolivia thousands of years ago. Peanuts grow underground on a small shrub with yellow flowers that produces a pod containing two to four peanuts.

The scientific name for peanuts is Arachis hypogaea and they are members of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family, which includes beans, peas, lentils and other legumes. Peanuts provide a range of essential nutrients such as healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals.

They are also very versatile in cooking and can be eaten raw, roasted, boiled or ground into a paste. Peanuts are widely used in cuisines around the world and can be found in many different forms including peanut butter, peanut oil, roasted peanuts and peanut flour. Furthermore, peanuts are also a popular snack food and an important source of income for farmers.

Fun fact: peanuts make a great snack for anyone on a keto diet

The jar used for the Guess How Many game

Not everyone uses a quart sized mason jar for this game. Some use other sizes, and others use entirely different kinds of jars. There are two kinds of quart sized mason jars: wide mouth and regular mouth jars. We used a wide mouth jar.

We used a classic glass mason jar to arrive at our peanut count.

Guess How Many In The Jar Formula and Conversion Facts

There will always be some variation depending on how high the jar is filled, but this ought to get you pretty close to the correct number and winning the prize!

Volume of the Jar Formula

The best formula for estimating the volume of a round jar is how to calculate the volume of a cylinder using the formula V = ฯ€ r2 h .

This means the volume is equal to pi multiplied by the radius squared multiplied by the height of the jar.

Tips:

  • pi = 3.14
  • the radius of the jar is half of the width.
  • the square of the radius is the same as multiplying the radius times itself.

Jar Calculator Conversions

You need to know the size of the jar too. We use a 64 oz mason jar (A 64 oz jar is the same as a quart jar.)

If it’s not a quart sized jar then you’ll have to do some calculating:

  • A pint-sized mason jar is 1/2 of a quart, so 572 / 2= 286
  • There are two quarts in a half gallon, so 572 x 2 = 1,144
  • There are four quarts in a gallon, so 572 x 4 = 2,288

Are they describing the jar in terms of ounces? Here are some conversions for you:

  • A pint size jar is also a 16 ounce jar
  • A quart size jar is also a 32 ounce jar
  • A half gallon size jar is a 64 ounce jar
  • A gallon size jar is a 128 ounce jar

These size references for jars are fluid ounces!
