How to Make a Pom Pom Three Ways

Let’s create the perfect addition for your crafts: a lot of pom poms! Here are three different methods for making pom poms – using your hand, a fork, and cardboard. Each method is easy to follow and makes fluffy professional-looking pom poms that will elevate your crafting game. There are actual pom pom makers around, but why buy one if you can make it with any type of yarn and supplies you have at home? 

So, grab your yarn, and let’s get started!

Method 1: Using your hand

This pom-pom tutorial is the best way if you need a medium-sized pom pom and don’t have the special tools to make it.

1. Hold the end of the yarn between your fingers and wrap the yarn around your fingers until it’s thick. 
2. Carefully slide the yarn off your fingers and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the middle of the bundle. 
3. Cut the loops at each end of the bundle with sharp scissors. 
4. Fluff and trim the pom pom to shape. Let’s make some fluffy pom poms!

Method 2: Using a fork

This method to make perfect pom poms is as easy as method 1 too, and you don’t even need to go to the craft store – simply grab a fork and make sure you have enough yarn. This method will make a dense pom pom.

1. Hold the end of your yarn between the two middle prongs of a fork. 
2. Wrap yarn around the fork, between the prongs, several times until it’s thick. Cut yarn. 
3. Tie a piece of yarn tightly around the middle of the bundle, between the two middle prongs of the fork.
4. Cut the loops at each end of the bundle with scissors.

6. Fluff and trim the pom pom to shape.

Method 3: Using cardboard

1. Cut two circles of cardboard, of the same size. Cut a small circle in the middle of each cardboard circle. 
2. Notch the edge of the circle to hold the yarn.
3. Place a piece of yarn on the cardboard template.
4. Place the two circles together.
5. Wrap the yarn around both cardboard rings. Continue until the yarn is wrapped thick.
6. Tie the piece of yarn between the two cardboard circles. tightly around the yarn.
7. Cut the loops at each end of the bundle with scissors.
8. Remove from cardboard.
9. Fluff and trim the excess yarn to shape.
