Don’t assume fresh is always better. According to a University of California, Davis study, many canned fruits, and vegetables have equal, or more nutrients than their fresh or frozen counterparts. 5 Minute Spicy Marinara Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup  olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3  cloves of garlic, pressed
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1-28-ounce can crushed red tomatoes
  • zest of one small lemon

How to make 5 Minute Spicy Marinara Sauce

In a cold saucepan, combine olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, oregano, and basil.

Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for about 1 minute until everything is fragrant.  Don’t let the garlic brown.

Add in tomatoes, simmer for 5 minutes, and then remove from heat.


Now for the trick from 101 Cookbooks, stir in lemon zest. I think this is the ingredient that makes the sauce slightly tangy and tastes so bold and fresh! Yum!

5 Minute Spicy Marinara Sauce

Cook Time 5 minutes
