Handmade gifts are so full of love and can make gift-giving so special. This simple chunky fringe crochet scarf is so warm, so cute, and a perfect handmade gift idea!

I seriously made this cozy scarf in just over an hour; adding the fringe actually takes longer than crocheting it. If you can, use the same yarn I used  {Lion Brand Hometown USA}. It’s chunky crochet and so soft. I absolutely love wearing this scarf because it keeps me so warm!

How to Make Fringe on a Scarf

Adding fringe to the scarf if easy. To make the fringe, cut lengths of yarn about 10” long, one strand of yarn for each stitch across. To attach them, fold the piece in half, push the loop end through a chain space on your scarf, pull the two ends through the loop, and pull tight.

How to Crochet an Infinity Scarf

You can either leave it as a long scarf, or you can make it into an infinity scarf. It is easy to convert this pattern to an infinity scarf crochet pattern. Do this by slip stitching the ends together to make a circle (I make mine into an infinity).

When sewing it together, twist it once so the fringe stays at the bottom of the scarf when wearing it. Line up the two ends with the fringe on the bottom of both ends. That’s it! You have made a beautiful crochet fringe scarf. It really is a great gift to keep a friend warm and cozy.

  1. For the infinity scarf, I don’t see anywhere how many chains to start with. It does say it is 6 feet in length and “adjust your chains accordingly” but not what to adjust them from. Other comments say the instructions were great, so I must be the only one who can’t understand the very beginning. Can someone enlighten me?

  2. Totally agree that homemade gifts are the best! I know my sisters are going to love this (and use it often). Turned out so soft!

  3. Super fun scarf! Great instructions! The scarf is so beautiful! Going to need make one also for my mom, 3 sister – in – laws, and my niece! 😀

  4. I just love this pattern! I have made a few shawls that for crocheting into the chain space instead of the stitch, and they work up so fast! A perfect example is the Doris Chan All Shawl and I believe one on posh pooch designs. I’m all about fringe on shoulder/neck accessories too. Thank you for a great pattern, and free too! I’m tempted to add a tapered down stitch count at each end to make the ends curl in a a twist. It would make an interesting g look with that fringe! Boho, here I come!

  5. I don’t understand how many rows to do your instructions say row1, row 2, and the rows 3-5, is that it, seems to be pretty short???

  6. I make scarves and blankets to sell. I found this pattern and decided to give it a try. The only thing I found is how rough and still the scarf feels. Also, I though the fringe seemed a bit small based on your instruction. I followed the instructions to a tee, yet found my scarf looking quite different from the one pictured.
I am sorry to be such a bother and point out the negatives. Other than those two problems I find the scarf to be quite beautiful.
Is it safe to send it through the washer or maybe just hand wash it to alliveate me of the stiffness of the scarf? I think that would be a possible solution.

  7. I love it. For the infinity scarf, did you put a twist in it, or just seam the ends together with them straight?
