How to make red white and blue cupcakes

I used LorAnn Professional Liquid Food Coloring and a basic white cake mix.

Mix the cake following directions. Divide the batter into three bowls (about 1 1/2 cups each). Add red and blue food coloring.  I added about 30 drops of blue and 40 drops of red.

Melt about 30 – 40 candy coating disks slowly in the microwave. The candy must be melted low and slow.  This will help the candy coating release from the mold and remain shiny.  Melt at 15-second intervals, stirring in between intervals.

Place melted candy coating in a zip-lock bag or pastry bag and snip off the bottom corner of the bag.

Fill a star chocolate mold with candy coating. Tap mold firmly several times on a flat surface to remove any air bubbles.

If you don’t have a mold you can draw a small star shape onto parchment paper using the bag filled with melted candy, Once the candy is completely cool and hard, gently remove from the paper and place on cupcakes.

TIP: If not using a mold, hand draw a page of stars or print a page of stars and place the sheet under a piece of waxed paper so you can see the printed stars and use them as a guide while you squeeze the candy into star shapes.

Allow candy coating to completely harden. It can be placed in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes or 5 minutes in the freezer to speed up the process. Turn the mold over and tap the mold firmly against a hard surface to release the candies.  Candies should come out easily, if they don’t, place back into the freezer for a few minutes.
