…..and a new phone.  For the next three months I will be trying out a new Windows Phone!

So meet my new phone, the Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone.

One thing I love about a smart phone are the apps that can make my life easier, keep me organized and entertain my children. This new Windows Phone has many of its own signature apps.

Call me weather girl with this cool app

Baby it’s hot outside. We just experienced 10 days of triple digit weather! After a brief cool down we are ready for another slow and steady warm up.  Our weather is unpredictable so it is great that I can always have a weather update right at my finger tips with Weather Flow on my phone. This app has rich graphics that move with the weather, really pretty (even when the weather is not)!

Until our weather improves I will be turning lemons into lemonade and keeping cool with this fun recipe and checking my phone daily for a possible cool down!

Watermelon Lemonade

2 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (strained)
2 generous cups of cubed watermelon (seeds removed)
2 cups cold water or sparkling water
Ice

In a medium saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, remove from heat and cool. Meanwhile, puree watermelon in the blender and strain to remove any seeds. You should have about 1 cup watermelon juice.  Add the lemon juice, watermelon puree and  to the simple syrup (sugar water) chill. Stir in two cups water, serve over ice.

Rather cool off with a cocktail?

Guess What? There is an app for that too!  Cocktail Flow is full of recipes and shopping lists for alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails. I love this app! Don’t miss the recipe for the Strawberry Martini.

How do you stay cool?

What are your favorite summer drinks and cocktails? Please feel free to leave recipes in the comments so we all can try!

Microsoft gave me the Windows Phone and compensation for this test drive.

  2. That Watermelon Lemonade looks wonderful, can’t wait to try the recipe.

  3. One of my go-to cool down drinks for summer is a mixture of diet 7up, cranberry juice and lime vodka. Adding a squeeze of fresh lime makes it even better!

  4. I also love this app…Fooducate. You can scan barcodes on most food items and it will rate it A-F and tell you why it is rated that way. eg. One servings is equivalent to 5 tsp sugar.

You can then click on this and get further information.
It also allows you to click on a tab to find better alternatives.

If the item is not in their database, you can scan and send them the item.

  5. My kids and I have been making these smmoothies for years. It comes from Cooking Light 2003 but I can’t fine it anywhere on-line. It doesn’t use ice so you don’t need a high speed blender. We mix and match berries, yogurt and sorbet flavors.
    Berry Smoothies
    2 Cups Fat-Free Milk
    1 Cup Frozen raspberries
    1 Cup Raspberry Sorbet
    1 (8 oz) carton vanilla low-fat yogurt

Place all indgredients in a blender, process until smooth. ENJOY!!!!

  6. Our current favorite summer drink is one that my boyfriend came up with. It’s a basil mojito! You make it the same way as you make a mojito (sugar, rum and soda water) but you substitute basil for the mint. We also like to add a couple of freshly squeezed limes. Yum!

  7. Your watermelon drink looks yummy! Our favorite summer drink is a “Beer Margarita” – just 4 ingredients! 1 12 oz. can frozen limeade; 1 Corona Beer; 1 12oz. can lemon-lime soda; 12 oz. Tequila Gold (just fill the limeade can for this). Serve over crushed ice! Fantastic!!

  8. I think the navigation app is the app I use the most on my phone. It saves my life. I am new to smart phones though and am amazed at all of the amazing things they can do. I am starting to wonder what I did without mine. What will they think of next? That drink looks amazing. I will have to make it for my kids It is over 100 degrees here today too.

  9. This recipe looks amazing. I was just asking my Mom if you could make watermelon juice because it is so refreshing. I use instagram the most.

  10. I am a bit older and still trying to figure out my smart phone but I love being able to have someone enter navigation in and it directs me to a location!

  11. I love to read on my phone so the nook or kindle app get used quite often when waiting at doctors etc.. It’s amazing what you can do with a phone these days!

  12. My new favorite app is Line Camera. It has a self timer and other great easy ways to fix pictures etc…
