How to Make Skull Shaped Bread

I used my favorite basic yeast dough to make these delicious rolls and I floated them in a yummy bowl of blood — okay just kidding! These skull-shaped bread rolls are floating in a to die for bowl of Tomato Basil Soup! This spooky meal won’t disappoint! Here is a printed recipe for the bread dough.

Basic Yeast Dough Recipe

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1 c Warm water
  • 3 tb Sugar
  • 2 tb Butter
  • 1/2 ts Salt
  • 3 c All-purpose flour (use up to 3 1/2 cups if needed)
  • 1 egg

Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water, and let stand 5 minutes (or until you see bubbles). Add butter, 3 cups flour, and salt, and mix in a food processor or mixer. Next add the yeast mixture and egg. Mix to form a soft dough (about 45 seconds in the food processor with a dough blade and about 2 minutes in a mixer. Spray hands with cooking spray, then remove the dough from the mixer. Place dough in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts for about 45 mins to an hour or until doubled in size, or cover and refrigerate dough for up to 5 days (If refrigerated, shape dough, place in pan then let it rise before baking). Punch the dough down, with lightly sprayed hands shape the dough, and bake. This dough also makes delicious cinnamon rolls. Adapted from Southern Living

Lightly spray pan with cooking spray. Place about a 1/4 cup dough in each skull face.

Allow dough to rise again, about 30 – 45 minutes. It will almost double in size. Place the remaining dough in the refrigerator while these four rolls rise and bake. Bake rolls at 400 degrees for about 10 – 12 minutes. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.

This playful yet delicious dish is the perfect way to add a spooky twist to your next meal. Whether you’re preparing it for a Halloween party or just a cozy night in, the combination of the savory tomato basil soup and the fun skull-shaped bread is sure to be a hit.
