Hello Skip To My Lou Readers!
My name is Bev and I blog over at Flamingo Toes.

Bev-at-Flamingo-Toes

I am so excited to be here today as part of the Bake, Craft, Sew-a-long series!

I love making handmade gifts, especially quick and easy projects. This little Embroidered Coin Purse is so fast to make and easy to personalize!

Quick and Easy Embroidered Coin Purse

This one has sweet embroidery lettering that says “oh hello”.

Oh Hello Embroidery

You could easily embroidery another phrase or name though, or just make it out of really cute fabrics!

Ok. I may have gotten carried away.
Let’s just focus on our first one, k?

gusset coin purse

Here’s what you will need to make your own:

  • Fabric for outside of coin purse – a smallish piece about 8″ x 18″.
  • Fabric for lining of purse – same size
  • Fusible Fleece – you guessed, same size
  • Coin purse frame – I used 8cm half round frames
  • Pattern for Coin purse with gusset
  • E-6000 glue

Begin by cutting out your fabric and fusible fleece pieces. Iron your fusible fleece onto the wrong side of the outer fabric.

If you are going to embroider one side of the purse, do that first. I just hand wrote “Oh Hello” with a disappearing ink pen and stitched the letters using a back stitch. If you need some help with embroidery, check out my Embroidery Tips page.

Mark the center bottom of each side piece, and the center of the gusset piece. Line up the center points of the gusset and one of the side pieces. Pin in place, curving the gusset to fit the bottom and part of the sides. Sew with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Clip the curves.

Line up the center of the other side of the gusset with the other side piece and pin in place. Sew the gusset to the other side, continuing up the sides until the marked lines (on the pattern). Clip the curves again.

Repeat these steps for your lining fabric and press the pieces.

Turn the lining wrong side out and place the outer fabric inside the lining piece. Line up the curved top pieces. Sew around the top curves down to the center seam, then up and around the other top side. Leave an opening on one top piece about 2″ long for turning right side out.

Turn the purse right side out and tuck the lining inside. Hand sew the opening closed.

Now you’re ready to add the frame. Squeeze out a bit of E-6000 glue onto a plate or other disposable surface. With a toothpick, add glue to the inside of one half of the frame. Tuck one side of the purse top into the frame, pushing the fabric up into the frame so that the seam is completely inside. Hold the fabric in place a little bit to let the glue set, then let it dry for a few hours.

gluing frame to purse

Glue the other top of the purse into the other side of the frame and let dry. Don’t use the purse for 24 hours, just to let the glue really set up and dry. Then you’re ready to use it for all kinds of things!

The lining is so cute and I love that the gusset gives you just a little more room in the purse.

And then have fun making up tons more!

  1. Oh my goodness, I just finished my first one. It is so adorable, I don’t think I can wait till Christmas to give these out!

  2. I have a few questions. I printed out the pattern and sewed up a little purse. however, I couldn’t get a nice corner where the gusset meets the two sides- yours is super smooth, and mine has a wrinkle on both the front and the back of the lining and the outer piece where the three pieces meet. Any suggestions on that? Also, I bought a metal frame that is 8 CM, it looks similar to yours, but this purse ended up about 2 CM to small to fit into it. I printed the pattern without the “fit to frame” to make sure it would be the right size, and I used 3/8 inch seams, and really in most places, 1/4″ seems. Thoughts? Thanks so much! I think this purse is super cute, and I would really like to make them for Christmas!

  3. Luuuurve!!!! I’m a huge fan of Flamingo Toes, and this is the cutest little gift idea! Seems like you could make a small handbag with a slightly larger frame, which is right up my alley. Thanks, as always, for fabulous inspiration! Pinning this fabulous creation so I don’t lose track of it!
