Hi Skip to My Lou readers! I am so very excited to be posting over here for the annual Bake, Craft, Sew extravaganza! My name is Caroline and I blog over at Sew Caroline about living creatively, sewing/crafting/baking, and living as a newlywed in Texas with my husband and our cutie patootie new pup!

Today I’m really excited to share with you all a little tutorial on how to make the perfect ruffly apron to wear while baking your apple pies & roasting a turkey. Aprons are a southern thing, y’all, but I promise you can rock one too– especially one this cute!

What you need:
1/2 yard of fabric for the backing
1/2 yard of fabric for the tie
1/4 yard of fabric of 6 different fabrics (for ruffles)
(optional) 3/4 yard of pom pom trim
scissors//rotary cutter
sewing machine
(optional) ruffler foot
straight pins

Step ONE:
Choose your beautiful fabrics and cut them out according to the graphic below

straps: cut 2- 8″xWOF (width of fabric, ~44″)//backing: cut 1- 20″x 14″ & cut 1- 20″ x 15″ (I used muslin for the backing)//ruffles: cut 6- 8″xWOF (width of fabric, ~44″)

Step TWO:
When you have it all cut out, we’ll start ruffling. Start by pressing your ruffle fabric length wise (creating a 44″x4″ strip). Use your ruffler attachment or go old school & turn your stitch length to its longest length & pull the bobbin thread to create a ruffle.

Repeat this for all six ruffle pieces.

Step THREE:
Attach your ruffles! Start with the bottom ruffle and pin & sew it about one inch from the bottom of your backing fabric (the 20″x14″ piece). After the bottom ruffle is attached, measure up 1.5″ from the seam and pin & sew your next ruffle.

Continue this until all of your ruffles are attached.

Step FOUR:
Put your other piece of backing fabric facing the ruffles. Pin & sew along the top edge. Flip to the back and press at the seam.
Step FIVE:
Take your two strap pieces and pin and sew them right sides together along the short sides. After you have a reallllly long strip, fold that in half long ways and sew along the long side. Flip it right side out and flip in the edges and top stitch.
Step SIX:
Find the middle of the tie and place it on the middle of the top of the apron (if you’re using an embellishment such as poms, add these underneath the tie). Top stitch along the front of the apron!
I hope y’all enjoyed this fun little apron! I’d love to see your projects. Send me a tweet or instagram when you’ve made your fun Christmas apron!

  1. Love the apron, am going to do one for me and my daughter for Easter and other holidays this year. I’m also pining this also. Thanks.

  2. I love your tutorial! You give great instructions and pictures make it so easy to follow! The apron is awesome! I’m going to make several holiday aprons. Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas!

  3. Hi Jax- all you do is flip the second backing and let it hang. If you’d like to stitch it down, you can.. but its not necessary. Its only there to hide the ugly-ness of seeing the backside of the backing where the ruffles are sewn down to! 🙂

  4. I really like the apron… would like to try one but I am a little confussed. With the second backing it says to stitch at the top but I didn’t understand what to do with it after. Am I flipping and attaching it to the back side of the first backing? I so, where and how? Thanks so much, Jax

  5. What an adorable apron! My daughter is 10 and it learning to sew… she really wants to try this project next. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I may make one of these for my cupcake baking, manga and steam punk style loving, daughter (She is head baker at Gigi’s off 86th in Indy). I may not make it a Christmas apron though, just a cutesy ruff-e-licious apron. 🙂

  7. What a darling apron. The fabric selections are just beautiful. BTW, I would love it even more if I had the tiny waist to go along with this apron. :)Thanks for sharing.
