Homemade Irish Cream Liqueur is a really yummy treat, I love it added to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. It is so easy to learn how to make irish cream and it makes a great gift. In fact, you’ll probably be asked to share the recipe!
Giving handmade heartfelt gifts is a fun way to celebrate the holidays. Try making one of these edible gifts or one of these homemade Christmas gifts.
What is the flavor of Irish Cream?
This classic whiskey liqueur has a vanilla chocolate flavor that is sweet and creamy. You can buy the original Irish cream under the label Bailey’s. We especially enjoy it around the holidays but it makes a fun (and appropriately Irish) gift for St. Patricks day too.
Irish Cream INGREDIENTS
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Irish whiskey
- Chocolate syrup
- Vanilla extract
- Instant coffee crystals
- Whipping cream (heavy cream)
- Sweetened cream of coconut (such as Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut) This ingredient is optional. It gives a bit of depth of flavor but doesn’t make it taste like coconut. It is okay if you want to leave it out. My can was solid at the top, so I placed the can about 2 inches of water in a skillet and heated until the cream of coconut was liquid).
How long does homemade Irish Cream liqueur last?
As a rule of thumb to be safe, I look at the expiration date on the whipping cream I use. Write the expiration date on the back of the gift tag so the recipients will know how long to keep. Also, be sure to keep it refrigerated.

Recipe Notes:
I used 8oz tall skinny bottles from Germany (sorry). I have tried to find them online with no luck, they were not expensive about $1.00 or so each. I did think these swing top glass bottles would also make a beautiful presentation. They are 8.5 ounces, so if you forgo your cup of coffee it might work — or you could add an extra 1/4 cup of cream and I don’t think it would alter the recipe too much.
There are many bottle supply companies online where you can find 8 oz bottles. You might also try World Market, the Dollar Store, and Hobby Lobby.

Irish Cream Drinks
Here are a few cocktail recipes perfect for using your Irish Cream.
- Buttery Nipple – Yeah, the name isn’t the best but this is delish! Fill a shot glass with 1 ounce of Butterscotch Schnapps and then carefully pour 1/2 ounce Irish Cream over the back of a spoon. This will help the Irish Cream float on top of the schnapps.
- Irish Car Bomb – this one tastes great like a milkshake
- Chocolate Martini
More GIFT Ideas
You could dress the bottles up even more with a hand-painted bottle stopper! Another festive and delicious drink you can make for gift-giving is a bucket of Frozen Tumbleweeds. This alcoholic ice cream is AMAZING! Who wouldn’t want to receive a bucket!
Enjoy!

Any suggestions for good places to buy glass bottles in a variety of fun shapes?
Yumm! I will have to try this! Guess we are a couple of bootleggers…I just posted my homemade Kahlua recipe a couple days ago!
Thank you for that delicious sounding recipe..I have three daughters who love Irish cream coffee. I will add this to my list of homemade gifts for them for Christmas. I better include their husbands too, or there might not be enough to go around! You could also use enamel paints for glass and personalize the bottles with some pretty flowers or designs, also, or maybe sew up a pretty cloth gift bag to wrap it with.
Thank you so much for this idea!
Whew…was checking your blog last night and it was GONE…so glad you’re back this morning 😀
Anyone have a suggestion for a non-alcoholic substitution for the whiskey?
This is a great idea.
Quite a few years ago (before I knew that I was a FOODIE, or even what that was), we went to a dinner party. The meal was absolutely outstanding- every part of it- main course, place cards, homemade EVERYTHING- nothing like I had ever experienced before.
And she finished the meal off with coffee and homemade Irish cream liqueur…
I have been wanting to make it ever since… and this would be a fantastic way to both make/serve and give it out as parting gifts! Thanks! (love your flashbacks:)
I have found the Bartles & James wine cooler bottles work really great for liquid gifts. Save the gold screw-on caps, rinse everything in a bleach water solution and dry in dishwasher. I add curling ribbon to the neck and attach the tag to the ribbon. Gold, red and green ribbon look great for Christmas! It’s a sacrifice to empty them, but I manage . . .
Yum! Thanks for the recipe!
Your blog is awesome!!
I blogged about this delicious recipe and about christmas tags that you had featured in my blog white rabbit treasures. Hope you don’t mind 🙂
Have a nice weekend! 🙂
