Your friends might also like homemade Irish Cream. It is another one of my easy gift ideas for adults.
One evening many years ago when I was out with my friends we all decided to enjoy an after-dinner cocktail. As I looked over a drink menu I saw a Tumbleweed listed and decided to try it. The flavors in this drink have had me hooked ever since.
When at home one evening I wanted dessert and an after-dinner cocktail that is when I first made Frozen Tumbleweeds. I am a huge fan of ice cream and decided to mix vanilla ice cream with coffee liqueur and crème de cacao. Viola, there you have it the Frozen Tumbleweed a delicious milkshake-like after-dinner cocktail.
It doesn’t stop there thou, I figured out how you can share this drink with others in a personal and festive way. You can make this recipe in bulk and package it as a present for Christmas or another special event.
Only Three delicious ingredients are in my Frozen Tumbleweeds
Only 3 ingredients needed for this yummy drink! Grab some festive plastic buckets for gifting and you are ready to make an awesome gift.
Here’s what you need:
- A softened five-quart container of vanilla ice cream.
- Coffee liqueur, such as Kahlua. (I used Kamora since I am on a budget and it worked just great.)
- Crème de cacao, such as Hiram Walker.
- Half-gallon buckets with a festive pattern on them. Three is the perfect number of buckets for my recipe. (I found these at Wal-Mart, but the local grocery stores and the dollar store also carry them during the holidays)
Here’s How You Make Frozen TumbleWeeds
Begin by pulling the vanilla ice cream out of the freezer to soften.
Put the softened ice cream into a large mixing bowl.
Next, add the coffee liqueur and crème de cacao and mix well. I found using a handheld electric mixer the easiest way to mix all the ingredients together.
Fill the buckets with the Frozen Tumbleweeds drink mix. Once filled, place the lids on the buckets.
Put a label on the lid that identifies what is in the bucket, and storage and serving instructions. The instructions on the label should read:
- Keep the Tumbleweeds in the freezer, and
- Stir before serving.
If you like the labels I used you may download them. I printed them on 1-up label paper and cut out on the gray line. You can purchase individual sheets from a copy store like Kinko’s or order 1-up label paper online.

Let’s turn this delicious drink in a Christmas gift.
Let’s Turn This Delicious Drink into A Great Gift
Place a ribbon vertically around the bucket. Make sure the ends of the ribbon come together in the front of the bucket. Next, where the ribbon comes together, I placed a label with a greeting from our family.
Just for you, I have made a downloadable greeting label for your use. To personalize the label, download it and change the area that says who the gift. Click your cursor over that area and you should be able to customize the labels (I am crossing my fingers that this works).

What a fun idea! This frozen tumbleweeds recipe will be perfect for bringing to holiday parties.
Love this – I made one for each of my neighbors and they all loved it too! I pinned the recipe to make again soon! Thank you
Nice drink recipe! I don’t drink alcohol but have friends that do, will pass this on! 🙂
Heather, they are like a shake.
Diane, I found these at Wal-Mart but I have also seen plastic buckets at Target and the Dollar Store. Hope this helps.
Yes, Rebecca, it is severed like a shake (the yummiest shake ever). Sorry, I don’t know how many servings for sure but you should be able to get about 8 – 8-ounce servings.
I assume this is poured into a glass and served like a shake? Do you recall how many servings you get out of a half-gallon bucket? Thanks, this is a darling idea!
Got the buckets and did this for my neighbors – they just loved it! Thanks for the great idea! I have another question for you. I LOVE the typeface that you used for the labels and would love to use it for my Christmas cards next year. Can you tell me what the name of the typeface is? Thanks so much! Love your website!
Great idea! Where do you get buckets with lids?
