Hi, I’m Sabra from Sew a Straight Line. I’m excited to be here on Skip to My Lou sharing my Holiday Bake Craft Sew Along gift idea. Today I have a fun little sewing (or no-sew, your choice) project that you can do with kids.
These Friendly Faces Gift Tags are super simple to make, make a great kid craft, and add a personal, handmade touch to any gift. They’re also kind of hilarious.
First, you’re going to need pictures of the gift-recipients, preferably a full-face-front shot. Crop the images to a square, close around the face. Print the faces onto image transfer paper. I prefer to use Artist Transfer Paper, but any t-shirt/image transfer medium will work.
Cut the faces out as close to the face-lines as possible. I wanted my kids to be able to add elf hats to the faces, so I also chopped off an angle from each head.
Cut pieces of fabric that will accommodate both the face and the artwork that will go around the face. I did mine at 11”x5”
Transfer the faces onto the fabric using the transfer paper instructions. Make sure to place the faces in such a way that there is plenty of room to draw around.
Grab some fabric markers
And some kids, and let them have at it.
After the body is drawn onto the fabric, lay the artwork wrong side facing onto some fabric for the back.
Cut out around the face and body, leaving seam allowance if you’re going to be sewing.
Now, you can either sew the fabric together (wrong side facing with a zig zag stitch. right side facing, leave a gap for turning, turn and top stitch) OR we just used some double-sided fabric adhesive. You can attach a ribbon on after, or sew it into things as you go.
Make a funny elf for everybody on your list!
They can be used as ornaments or even crazy paper dolls. I think these would be super fun to do at a kids’ table for a holiday dinner. Just have the faces ironed onto the blank fabric, and laying at each child’s place. Provide markers at the table so the kids decorate and draw their own bodies. After dinner, they can play with them and take them home as a little gift.
