Howdy, Skip to My Lou, friends! My name is Kyla and I’m the creative mind behind  Funky PolkaDot Giraffe! I’m a 2nd grade teacher turned stay-at-home mom and these days I keep busy creating for my blog, juggling my three kids, and stealing a moment for myself between being a full time taxi for my kids. My little Isabella is recently obsessed with her American Girl doll and wants the two of them to dress alike whenever possible. One way I found was easy to make them matchy-matchy without sewing an entire wardrobe, is to make cute scarves. My favorite scarf has been the ruffle scarf I made in my favorite color.

This scarf is made of jersey knit, is soft and warm and perfect for the little lady, and her doll, in  your life. You will need about a yard of jersey knit fabric, a sew machine, scissors, and matching thread. Both scarves took me about a total of a half an hour to make, so it’s the perfect quick gift.

For the girl’s scarf, cut four pieces of jersey knit from selvage to selvage that are 8 inches wide. With right sides together, sew two pieces together at the short ends, so that you have one long piece. Repeat with the other two pieces together. Now you’ll have two long strips of fabric that are 8 inches wide.

Next, we are going to ruffle the fabric. To do this, set the tension of your thread to it’s highest setting – mine is nine. Then, set your stitch length to the longest it will go – mine is five. This will ruffle and gather the fabric as you sew.

Sew right down the middle of each long piece of fabric. When you are done, you’ll have two long, gathered and ruffly pieces of fabric. Next, we will put the two pieces together.

Lay one of the ruffled pieces down on a flat surface and make it as smooth and flat as you can. The, lay the second piece of fabric on top and match the edges, pinning down the edges as you go.

Put the fabric sandwich back onto your machine. This time, put your tension back to normal and your stitch length back to normal and sew a straight, non-gathering stitch, on top of your gathering stitch. If you only want one ruffled stitch and you like the long ends open, then you are done! I wanted to add in a few more gathers, so follow the next steps if you’d like to do the same thing.

Reset your tension to it’s highest setting and your stitch length to it’s longest length. Put your fabric sandwich back onto your machine, with your foot about 1-1.5 inches from the edge of the fabric. Sew down both long edges in the same manner. Don’t forget to backstitch when you begin and when you end!

Voila! You have a pretty ruffly scarf that will keep your girl warm during the upcoming chilly months of winter! The jersey knit is soft and cozy and my Isabella loves hers. If you have a dolly to sew for, then repeat the above steps, but you will only need two pieces of fabric that are four inches long. You won’t need to sew any pieces together to make extra long pieces. Just cut the two pieces of four inch fabric from selvage to selvage and then get to ruffling following the instructions above.

When you’re done, you’ll have a very happy little girl and adorable matching scarves for a girl and her dolly. It would be fun to make them in a variety of colors, so they can have a variety of scarves to wear. Since it only took me about a half hour to make both of them, it’s a quick and easy gift and project. You can also increase the length by sewing three lengths of fabric together to make a scarf for yourself or a friend!
