DIY Yo-Yo {Craft Camp}

Hi there! I’m Amy from Mod Podge Rocks – excited to be here at Cindy’s Craft Camp! She has so many fun projects, so let me throw one into the mix.

So how long has it been since you yo-yo’d? A long time, right? It’s a summer activity that, at least when I was young, could keep a kid busy for hours. I found some wood yo-yos at my local craft store, but they were way boring. So why not spice them up with a little paint and Mod Podge? I thought you might like that.

Gather These Supplies

Wood yo-yos

FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Ballet Pink and Blue Ink

FolkArt Extreme Glitter – Hologram and Royal Blue

Mod Podge Gloss

Scrapbook paper – your choice of patterns

Pencil

Scissors

Paintbrush

Peel the stickers off of your yo-yos.

Trace the yo-yos onto your scrapbook paper.  I used two different scrapbook papers, as you saw.  Obviously you’ll need two circles – so do it twice.

Cut the circles out carefully.  Set the paper aside.

Paint your yo-yos.  If your papers are thick enough, just paint the edges.  I didn’t worry about painting down into where the string was.  Allow to dry.

Put a medium layer of Mod Podge down onto the yo-yo and spread out – put the paper down and smooth thoroughly.  Wipe away any Mod Podge that comes out the edges when you are spreading.  Allow to dry for 15 – 20 minutes and then repeat with the other side.

Coat the entire yo-yo with Mod Podge.  Allow to dry and then put on another coat.  Be careful not to get the Mod Podge down onto the string!  If you do, your yo-yo won’t actually “yo.”

I wanted a little “schwing” added to the outside rim of both yos, so I added FolkArt Extreme Glitter.  I added Royal Blue to the Blue Ink and Hologram to the Ballet Pink.  I allowed to dry and gave two coats.

I even went “wild and crazy” with the pink yo-yo – I did flowers one side and dots on the other. Of course, let your kids do whatever they like. It might be fun to decorate these with fabric as well!
