This chalk cloth lunch bag is a breeze to sew and it is unique way to send some fun doodles to lunch with you child. A couple years ago I made a simple lunch bag out of oil cloth. This doodle bag uses the same pattern but instead it is sewed with chalk cloth.
Supplies for Chalk Cloth Lunch Bag
1 yard of chalk cloth will make two lunch bags
leather sewing machine needles
tiny clothes pins
a button
a couple inches of elastic cord
1/3 yard of nylon webbing
upolstery thread
chalk markers
How to make a lunch bag
Cut two pieces of chalk cloth 15″ X 12 ” , cut a 2 1/2″ square from each bottom corner.
I use tiny clothes pins to hold it all together.
With right sides together sew along each side and across the bottom.
Pinch the bottom corners together.
Stitch across.
Repeat for other side.
Turn lunch bag right side out. Fold top down about a half of an inch. Top stitch around the top edge using a 3.5 stitch length. The tiny clips will keep the top even while you sew. Remove just before sewing.
Attach the handle to the outside by turning each end of the webbing under 1 inch. Sew handle down 2 inches from the top edge and each end of the handle over 2 1/2″ from the side seam. Stitch about an inch on each side of webbing.

Sew a piece of elastic cord big enough to go around your button in the middle edge of the bag on the top inside edge.
Fold over the lunch bag and mark where the button needs to go. Sew on a cute button!
TaDah! A cute doodle lunch bag. This bag was doodled by my brother for Bella’s first day of school! Yes, I have said it here before he is an amazing brother!

This is AWESOME! I’m so late to the sewing party. I can’t sew AT ALL but would love to have this for my 4 yr old. Are you in the market to sell one? She would draw for days on this bag. She loves drawing! This will make helping in the kitchen even more fun when we make lunches.
Just found this site. My daughter wanted a lunch bag for work. So I made it with blue and white toile, lined it with coordinating blue and accented it with a silver antique button and silver chain for a handle. Thanks so much for the pattern and excellent directions. Saw one pattern before and it was confusing I just decided not to try. So thanks to you I can make a beautiful bag for my daughter!
Hi CJ, I found them at Michael’s Arts & Crafts. Yes, it just wipes away with a damp cloth.
Just curious, where did you get your chalk markers? There are so many different kinds, that I wasn’t sure where you got yours? Also, the chalk on the bag.. do you just wipe away with a wet wash cloth or? Cute tutorial!! 🙂
How cute is this!! I didn’t even know chalk fabric existed!
you are so creative Cindy!! I LOVE this!

This is great! How fun. I want one, lol. I bet my niece would adore it too.
Cindy, this is absolutely precious!! You did a fabulous job on it! I bet she seriously loves it! Thanks for sharing how to make this!

Oops! Never mind about the cut corners comment. The bag appeared in the picture to have been cut off on the left edge and I thought it needed to be cut, but it was just how the picture was cropped. For some reason, I didn’t think the same about the right side. lol
Cute idea. I’d never heard of chalk cloth before. The only step missing is cutting the corners before bringing them together. The 1st pic shows square edges, but picture #2 shows them cut. It would be good to know how much to cut off, but I’ll figure it out.
This will surely make lunch fun! Love my favorite little model! Have a great 3rd grade year, Bella! Can’t wait to see YOUR doodles on this bag!
This is absolutely adorable..I really need to get back to sewing..
I guess my question is how well does it keep the food inside of it cold? You’d have to use an ice pack in it, right?
That will be such a useful bag for many things plus the insulation factor from the weather.
