My daughter is 10--and she's very into the disco movement....
so I thought.
let's make a disco ball...

{cheap}

Disco Ball Supplies

  • Punch balls (package of 4 for a dollar ) Total score from the Dollar Store ’cause I have three kids. so each got one and still had one for my disco ball!
  • Newspapers I scrubbed some from the neighbors….(they dug them out of their recycling bin for me)
  • Flour and water .(about 1 part flour to 2 parts water) for a goopy paste
  • Old CD’s (about 25)
  • Heavy Duty Scissors and or Nippers to cut the CDs
  • Silver Spray Paint

HOW TO MAKE A DISCO BALL

Cut newspaper into strips and put in the flour and water goop– then run it between your fingers to get said goop off and stick and rub.

It’s not a clean project…but the fun ones never are.

This is the exact technique I’ve used to make a pinata…but the pinata needed to be sturdy enough to hold lots of candy so I did about 8 layers of newspaper. This one has about three…and dried in half the time.

Hang the covered balloon up to dry…(using the punch ball string)

After it was totally dry I cut a little hole in the balloon and it slowly deflated. Then I just slipped it out of the top hole. Added a little mod podge and more newspaper and covered up the remaining holes.

Then spray painted it….

white.
then silver
then glitter.

between coats i took some cds...
I have a TON
(the napster movement was BIG when i was in college) and that was ...ummm awhile ago.
so most of them are scratched and unreadable.

Here’s what I found…the discs that have the place for you to write on….(blank ones) are horrible. the shiny part literally peels right off.

it’s much better to use REAL CDs.

and also..some cracked when cutting…and some cut smooth.

There was no rhyme or reason as to which ones would be awesome. didn’t matter color..age or country vs rap. some did. some didn’t–it’s a trial by error. so good luck with that.

(i saved all those weird ones you get when buying stuff or ones you get in the mail–or even hit up your dollar store or thrift shop!)

I think I used about 25 CDs!

Then starting at the top I just worked my way down hot gluing the squares on.

HOT GLUE TIP: ( I hit it with a hair dryer to get rid of those hot glue “hairs”)

I hot glued the leftover middle of a cd to the top part of the disco ball where I was going to hang it for double reinforcement…and to finish it off.

Then I just added a string to hang!

It does take some time to get all those stinking squares glued on…but put on a new episode of white collar and it will be done in no time!

Then you can party like it’s 1999!!!

It really works! I remember the first time I hung it in my daughter’s room and then came in to find light everywhere where the sun hit it! it’s so much fun! I’m thinking about adding a little flashlight right next to it and then I can spin the disco ball every so slowly for our own little dance party!!!
