A big thank you to Tip Junkie who spent the weekend with us and showed us how cool we could be!  We have been having loads of fun creating this hairstyle.sock bun

Sock Bun Supplies

  • Worsted weight yarn in the color of hair
  • Size H crochet hook
  • yarn needle

How to make a sock bun

This simple tutorial will show you how to make a sock bun using a custom crocheted “sock” to match your hair color. It is a quick and easy project!

  • Chain 25
  • Double crochet in the second chain from hook, double crochet in each chain across (24 stitches)
  • Chain 2 (acts as first double crochet), double crochet in each double crochet across.
  • Repeat until you have 12 rows of double crochets.
  • Fasten off, weave in ends.

The size can be adjusted by the amount of stitches. For a smaller hair bun try 20 stitches across.

Now that you have your crocheted swatch, starting at the chain end, roll it up. With a tapestry needle, close the tube with a whipstitch.

The result should be a nice long even tube.

Next, bring the ends of the tube together to create a donut shape. Securely whipstitch the ends together. See how it is like a sock you’ve cut the toe off of? Sock buns can be made by rolling the sock into a donut shape – except I like the crochet version better because it’s a lot easier to match your hair for perfect camouflage.

How to make a bun

Now let me show you how to make a bun with this crochet bun maker. This hairstyle is a fantastic fix for long hair, or to add volume to shorter hair and create elegant updos from high ponytails.

First, gather hair into a ponytail – you can go higher for an evening look, or lower for a messy bun style, or daytime casual look.

Next, pull the ponytail through the crochet bun shaper and slide the sock doughnut down to the base of the ponytail.

Let hair cover around the crochet bun shaper so it is completely covered.

Fasten with an elastic ponytail holder – for this tutorial we used a visible elastic band, but you can make yours more invisible by matching your elastic ponytail holder to your hair color.

Finally, bobby pin the loose ends of hair into place around the base of the bun, covering the elastic hair band.
