A home for an acorn

We enjoyed this beautiful day with a long walk and a collection of acorns. The acorns needed a special home, a crochet covered acorn necklace.

Acorn1

This wonderful idea is from Resurrection Fern, a beautiful and thoughtful blog.  For instructions visit Resurrection Fern's Covered Acorn Necklace Tutorial. I used a US size D crochet hook.  I did have to increase the diameter on the last two rows to 15 stitches. I did this by adding SC two times in every other stitch. My chain for the necklace was about 125 stitches.

Now our acorns have a special home. Be sure to get extra acorns because it is a bit of a crisis if one falls out!

Crochet Mosaics

Just a heavy piece of cardboard, some scraps of yard, a crochet hook and glue provided some fun today!

I crocheted some chains in different lengths (actually the girls told me what color and how long).  If they were older it would have been fun to have them crochet their own chains.

They put glue on the cardboard.

Then they expertly arranged the crochet chains on the glue.

I think this activity would be great for older (Kate and Bella are 4 1/2) children  too! It would be easier for older children to fill in the whole space and it would also provide a fun way for them to practice crochet skills.

Heart

Round 1

Chain 4.  Make all of the next stitches in the first chain. 3 trc, 3 dc, chain 1, 1 trc, chain 1, 3 dc, 3 trc, chain 2 slip stitch

Round 2

Chain 3, in first trc make sc and hdc, in next stitch 3 hdc, in next stitch 2 hdc, sc in next four stitches, chain 1 dc in trc, chain 1, sc in next four stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, 3 hdc in next stitch, hdc and sc in next stitch, chain 3 and slip stitch in center

Round 3

Chain 3 , sc in  top of chain 3 from previous row , sc  in each stitch all the way around (until chain 3 from previous row).  I chained one at the tip of the heart to get around the point easier. At beginning of chain 3 from previous row chain three and slip stitch in center of heart.  Pull  the loop to the back and fasten off.

Inspired Crochet Designs wrote me and said that if you make the following changes on Round 3 it will keep the top of the heart from curling.

Round 3

Chain 3,  sc in  top of chain 3 from previous row , 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, then sc in each of the next stitches until point of heart, chain one for point, sc in next five stitches, then sc in next st, 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, chain three and then slip stitch in center of heart.  Pull the loop to the back and fasten off.

Let me know how it goes!

Lucky Shamrock Hair clip

lucky-shamrock-crochet-hairclip-1.jpg

If your little girl needs a bit o' green tomorrow it is not too late to make this little hair clip. It is based on this crochet pattern by Suzie----so I am hoping it works for you if you give it a go. It only takes a few minutes.

I used a size 4 crochet needle and embroidery floss (all 6 threads).

Chain 6, dc in 2nd chain from hook and then slip-stitch in remaining 4 chains (this makes the stem), chain 3 and join with a slip-stitch in the 3rd chain from hook to form a ring. For petal *chain 3 turn (only turn the first time), trc , dc , trc , chain 3 and slip-stitch in ring*. Repeat between * two more times so you have 3 petals. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Sew your lucky shamrock to a bobby pin or hair clip.

Now this little girl can tell her big brothers NO PINCHING!

What a Hoot!

When my niece, Katie, was home for Easter I did a little crocheting for her. Katie is a Chi Omega and I thought she needed an owl purse (Chi Omega's mascot). I don't really expect her to carry it around campus but I thought it would make a cute bag for something.

It was simple to crochet and I thought having a zipper in the back made it extra cool. I bought the pattern here. The pattern is made by Ana Paula Rimoli. Her Etsy shop is filled with some darling patterns. She has free patterns for a cupcake, fried egg and bear.
