Hey y’all, Melissa of Melly Sews with you today and I’ve got a quick and environmentally friendly sew for you – appliquéd gift bags. These are re-usuable year to year and can be a great way to use up scraps.

To make these, first cut two pieces of fabric for your bag that measure 9 1/2 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches tall. Then, you’ll cut your appliqués out of contrasting fabrics. I used some of the free appliqué patterns I have available in this Christmas Stocking post. Specifically, I used the tall tree, both leaves and 5 of the large petals.

Use Heat n’ Bond Lite or sewing spray adhesive to hold your appliqué pieces in place while you stitch around the edges using a zig-zag or appliqué stitch.

For even more detail on how to appliqué, check this post.

Hand sew beads in the center of the flower.

Once you have the appliqués sewn on the front of the bag, use the directions in the video below to sew the rest of your bag. If for some reason the video doesn’t load, you can also watch it here.

To add the tie to the top of the bag, I sewed 2 buttonholes on each side of the bag, each buttonhole 1 inch away from the center of the bag and oriented horizontally. Then run a ribbon from the back of the back through to the front and tie it.
