Up-cycled Holiday Pillows
Hello Skip to my Lou Readers! I’m Ariean from OneKriegerChick stopping by to share how I created fun holiday pillows from…dress shirts. I love to re-purpose items and I may have a slight addiction to decorative pillows. Creating pillowcases or pillow covers is an easy way to change out the look of your pillows whenever your heart desires. Make a few for yourself or as gifts or both!
Let’s get started…
How to make Up-cycled Holiday Pillows
Supplies…
- Button down dress shirts (I picked mine up at my local thrift store for $1.99 each)
- pillow forms
- scissors
- sewing machine (thread, etc.)
- embellishment (if desired): felt, heat transfer paper, iron, Cutting machine like a Cricut
Okay…here we go. I chose to create covers for the pillows I already have on my sofa. No need to buy new pillow forms unless you are giving these as a gift.
I spread the shirt out flat and measured the existing pillow cover onto the shirt. Then, I cut the shirt the same size as the existing pillow cover. I pinned it into place and stitched each side. If you are really lucky, the pillow will fit perfectly into the new pillowcase. Can you even believe it was that easy? No buttonholes to sew or zippers to install…
Unfortunately, only one of my shirts created a perfectly fitted pillowcase. I just took the side in a bit to make the pillowcase more snug. Talk about quick pillow covers.
I was really thrilled with them just like this…but I couldn’t stop there. At least one deserved an embellishment, right…
I ironed transfer paper (heat and bond) onto felt and cut out the word “JOY” using my Cricut Explore machine…
Then, I ironed it onto one of the pillowcases. Transfer paper may vary, so follow the directions on the paper.
The details of the shirts are so fun and interesting…and all that had work was all done for me.
I’m loving the festive touch they bring to my home…guess it’s time to start decorating!
