My mother always taught me that “sharing is nice” and as Frank Burns of M*A*S*H so eloquently put it, “It’s nice to be nice to the nice.” And you’re nice, right? So I’m here to share a sweet and simple free crochet pattern for a placemat and napkin ring. It’s ideal for a quick gift or just to make your holiday entertaining look like you are rocking a blend between Martha Stewart and Cath Kidston.

How to crochet a Placemat and Napkin Ring

Felted Button Colorful Crochet Patterns (V-Stitch Placemat, Napkin Ring and Blanket) -- free crochet pattern

Hi!! It’s me, Susan, designer of colorful crochet patterns over at Felted Button. I’m thrilled to be guest posting at Skip to my Lou! I hope you think this project is fun, easy and versatile! For those who might know me, or who have ever made anything using a Felted Button pattern, you will know that my designs typically include lots of COLOR, lots of texture and lots of options for making it your own–to suit your style, space or event. This one is no different. I designed this simple V-stitch placemat and matching napkin ring to do just that. I worked this sample up in 6 lovely shades of cotton–all detailed in the pattern. It’s a super soft yarn with happy colors and an affordable price! But, of course, it must be WASHABLE. (Because a washable placemat is a no-brainer, right?)

I think one of my favorite things about this design, beyond the colors and nifty, wiggly stitch pattern, is the pom edging. It’s super easy and adds that updated retro feel to the piece–definitely NOT your granny’s crochet. Oh, and one more thing…the pattern includes a recipe to make this into a blanket, table runner, scarf, wrap, or in any dimensions you want!! I’m thinking a stash-busting blanket is in my future with this pattern!

The v-stitch seems super popular right now. I think that’s partly because it is such a whimsical and rhythmic stitch. But maybe it’s also because it’s a fabulous project for busting that stash! You can make it with all those little bits you have lying around that you just can’t seem to toss. In fact, I was thinking of working up a table runner for Thanksgiving in warm harvest colors. And wouldn’t it be awesome in neutrals with just a little pop of neon or intense color for any time of year?

She learned to crochet as a squirmy child from her very patient granny, but got distracted running hurdles and teaching science for many years before picking up her hook, buying way too much yarn and having a blast designing her own crochet patterns. You can find her patterns at FeltedButton.com.
