Hey! I’m Windy from WindyLou. I’ve been asked to share a tutorial for a fun sewn gift. As I puttered around the house trying to decide what I should make, I watched in frustration as one of my eight cats walked up to the fridge and pawed at the dish towel until it fell on the floor. Gross. Nobody needs extra laundry and let’s face it, cute towels are an easy personalized gift!

Pet Proof Dish Towel

A practical gift for pet (or toddler) lovers.

How to make a Pet Proof Dish Towel

Materials:

Dish towel (non-directional print is easiest)
fabric scrap 6″ x 9″ for topper pieces
1/2 yard twill tape
sewing machine
thread
scissors/snips
rotary cutter/mat (optional but helpful)
pins
iron/ironing board

Iron the fabric scrap and the towel if needed. Cut the fabric scrap in half lengthwise. Cut the twill tape in half and cut the dish towel in half (top to bottom)

With the wrong side facing up, fold and press the edges of the fabric scraps (toppers) around all 4 sides. Pin twill tape to the center of the wrong side of each fabric piece and sew around the folded edges of each of the toppers. Twill tape typically doe not unravel, but just to be safe, fold the end over twice and pin or press.

The dish towel at this point will be much wider than the fabric scrap (topper.) With the right side facing up, fold small sections of the towel towards the center and pin down to create pleats.

Once all pieces are pressed and pinned, it’s time to sew! Sew a straight seam about 1/2 an inch from the cut edge of the towel, to hold the pleats in place. Remove pins! Sew across the folds on the twill tape to secure the ends.

Now make a sandwich of topper pieces and dish towel. On the bottom, lay a topper piece wrong side up. Next place the towel right side up, and finally a topper piece right side up. After checking to make sure the twill tape is not caught in the sandwich and that the topper pieces are even, pin in place. Sew around all four sides, making sure to catch the towel inside the topper.

If using a non-directional print, you should be able to get two hanging towels from each dishtowel. It’s a quick, easy gift!
