My name is Ashlee from I’m Topsy Turvy and I’m SO excited to be here for the Fun Crafts for Kids summer series again!  Last Summer I shared my no bake Cheesecake, perfect for summer picnics, and this summer I’m sharing my kids new favorite, a Donut Picnic (can you tell we like eating outside?)!!!

a fun donut picnic to enjoy with your kids this summer, includes easy glaze recipes

You start with plain donuts (my grocery store sells plain ones, or order plain donuts, OR simply make your own like I do!) and a few glaze options, add some toppings and it’s a fun create your own donut picnic.  Perfect for a fun snack, or a crazy sugary dinner (pick the night Dad’s in charge of putting them to bed, right?)

I let my kids pick what glaze and toppings flavors they wanted.  We went with a basic vanilla glaze, chocolate glaze and maple glaze!  For toppings we have Cinnamon/Sugar, sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles and coconut!  If I was making this for adults I’d add chopped candied bacon, but my kids aren’t a fan.

This DOES get messy so make sure you use a blanket that washes easily.  I made this durable denim blanket years ago, and its still a favorite!  You want to make sure the bowls you use are wide enough to fit an entire donut face down.  Teach the kids to drop the donut in, give it a twist and then pull it up and let it drip off a bit.

My youngest doesn’t quite get the concept, but it’s fun to just let them do and create whatever they want.  Just keep some wet wipes handy. And getting messy is part of the fun for kids, right?

Make sure you add the toppings while the glaze is still wet.  If you want too long it will crust over and then the toppings won’t stick!  I let them add as much toppings as they wanted, but once they added the toppings there is no dipping again…

Also I did have a rule about double dipping the donuts in the glazes, I didn’t want the glazes to mix, but we had plenty of donuts if they wanted to try a different flavor!  Donut holes are PERFECT for trying various flavors as well!

cinnamon-sugar-donuts

My favorite? a basic cinnamon and sugar.  This is the ONE donut that I let them flip the donut around to cover both sides.  If your makeing them homemade the cinnamon and sugar will stick right to a warm donut.  If your buying plain donuts just dip once side in the plain glaze first, OR warm them in the microwave for a few seconds!

If you want to try making your own raised donuts head over to my site today to get this recipe.  It takes about 2 hours total, but only about 20 mins is actual work time, the rest is letting it sit and raise!
