Hey, hey Skip To My Lou peeps! I’m Jessica from Mom 4 Real, and I’m so happy to be here today to share a super simple kid’s craft with you! My daughter Kate is 11, so keeping her busy is a must during the summer. We have been hitting the pool and crafting away all summer long.

Stenciled Cork Board - Kid's Art Display

We are working on upgrading her bedroom decor to more of a big girl/tween room, and we are trying to make as much of it as we can on our own. I can’t tell you how happy it makes her to create something on her own, then see it displayed in her own room! One of the things she really wanted was a place to add some photos or art. These stenciled cork boards are the perfect place to display art, swim team ribbons or just about anything else you can imagine, and they were super simple to make!

Cork

We started with a pack of IKEA trivets that we bought for $3.99 last week.

stenciling

We spray painted ours white, but you could totally leave them as is. Once the spray paint was dry, Kate picked out 3 stencils that she wanted to use and got busy stenciling away!

Stencil

The key to stenciling is dabbing the paint on in a thin layer, moving the stencil brush up and down instead of in strokes. Be sure that once you have covered your piece with paint that you pull the stencil up while the paint is still wet to keep the paint from being pulled up when the stencil is lifted.

Kate stenciled all three of the trivets, and we hung them beside her window! They match the pillows that she made in Utah at a blog conference she attended with me and also the curtains that she made a few weeks ago! Smaller children could make these as well, just cut out the stencil and let them freehand them or use markers to draw on them!

  1. I have those same Ikea trivets and my question is how did you hang them? They do not have attached hangers.

  2. Love this idea! I think I may make a few to hang behind my desk in my office to use to pin stuff on.
