Hi Skip to my Lou readers!  I am Ashley from Simply Designing and I am thrilled to be here today!  I have two kiddos who both love to create and craft and during the summer we have a lot of extra time to be able to get creative!  But crafting with your kids can get expensive, especially if you buy a lot of craft kits or if your kids love to craft and go through craft supplies as fast as mine do.  So I am always trying to come up with fun and unique ways to craft with the supplies I already have at home!  This always saves me time and money.  And so the other day we created these really fun Coffee Filter Flowers and I am thrilled to be able to share them with you today!

We don’t actually drink coffee, but for some reason we always have coffee filters around our house (probably for crafting purposes!) and so we put them to good use and had some fun!

To Create a Coffee Filter Flower Bouquet, you will need:

  • White Coffee Filters
  • Water Colors
  • Paint brush
  • Water
  • Hole Punch
  • Green Pipe Cleaners
  • Vase (optional)

These are really so simple to create, but the magic lies in the creation process itself!

You will simply let your children paint the coffee filters with the water colors!

If they use more water, the color will spread and seep through the whole filter which is really quite magical to watch!  It produces beautiful and soft colors and lovely light flowers!  If your children prefer darker, more rich colors, they can use less water and the paint doesn’t bleed as much.  And just like snowflakes, no two coffee filters will end up the same!

After the filters are painted, you can either lay them outside in the hot sun to dry or leave them inside to dry.  I then folded the coffee filters into quarters and punched a teeny tiny hole in the middle of them.  You will insert your pipe cleaner into the center of your coffee filter, add a twist to the top of the flower and one just underneath it as well to help hold the flower in place.  And in just a few minutes you have a really fun coffee filter flower bouquet!

We put ours in a vase and enjoyed them for a while in our home!  My kids had SO much fun creating these and I loved that they were a nearly FREE craft project since we had everything on hand already!

Here are a few other fun summer boredom busters that you and your kids can do with supplies you probably already have at home:
