Hey there Skip to my Lou readers! This is Miranda from Someday Crafts and I’m so excited to be here with you today!! Skip to my Lou is one of my favorite blogs to check when I’m perusing blogland.

I’m here today to share my No-Sew Ruffled Tree Skirt. I realize there are only a few days until Christmas, but I’m a procrastinator at heart. There’s nothing like a good deadline (i.e. Christmas) to make me get to work. To prove my point, I’ll let you know that I actually purchased the supplies for this LAST Christmas. Yup, it’s only taken me a year to get around to doing this project. 🙂

To make this tree skirt, I used the following:

  • Fabric of your choice – I used about 1/2 yard of 3 different fabrics. I had a little bit leftover from each piece which I’m planning to incorporate into homemade stockings. Maybe I’ll get around to those next year. 🙂
  • Tree skirt base. Mine is a plain, felt tree skirt that I picked up on clearance last year. You could also use more fabric for this part, but I’m not sure how much you’d need.
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

I cut the fabric into strips, which was pretty simple with 2 of my fabrics. Since I was just going to ruffle the fabric, I wasn’t worried about exact cuts. I also didn’t do anything to the edges because eventually I’d like it to have a frayed and worn look. Two of my fabrics had easy places to eyeball the cutting – between the words and at about 5 rows of stars. For the polka dot fabric, I just estimated.

I ironed my fabric because it had been sitting folded for a year. That part isn’t required though. However, I think it also helps achieve a better finished product. Once your fabric is cut, start gluing! But watch your knuckles. I may or may not have quite a few burn marks on my knuckles because they kept getting in the way. Once I got into a rhythm with the ruffling, it wasn’t too much of an issue.

Once one layer is finished, just start working your way up. You can decide how full you want it by how close you place the layers together. If you want it fuller than mine, you’ll probably need more than 1/2 yard of each fabric.

Now before I show you the finished project, you have to promise not to laugh at my tree. It’s pretty sad. We have a fairly tiny living room in our apartment, so we need a skinny tree, which we don’t have. The big tree we have was purchased used last year and it’s WAAAAAAY too big for our living room. We made it work last year, but it required rearranging our whole living room. This year, I’m pregnant with twins and on modified bed rest, so I just wasn’t up for all that using the big tree required. So instead we used our little 3 footer…on a box to give it some height. Now – promise you won’t laugh? Promise? Ok…

It works for us – and my son loves it. He helped with all the decorating (which I didn’t even go back and fix) and is so proud of it! He also loves the new tree skirt. I made it one day while my husband was at work, so when we went to pick up my husband, he was telling him all about how gorgeous my new project is. My boy definitely knows how make his mama feel good! 🙂

There you have it. I’m an inpatient, procrastinating, pregnant crafter and I was able to complete this in about 2 hours.

  1. The skirt is beautiful and the tree is awesome! True beauty is seen with the heart, not the eyes. I love it!

  2. Love this sew much because there is no reason why crafts, pretty things and Christmas need to be difficult. I’m a big fan of “easy” because we only have our little children for so long. I don’t want to miss out on memory making time. Good job. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
