This chalk cloth lunch bag is a breeze to sew and it is unique way to send some fun doodles to lunch with you child. A couple years ago I made a simple lunch bag out of oil cloth. This doodle bag uses the same pattern but instead it is sewed with chalk cloth.

I use tiny clothes pins to hold it all together.

Turn lunch bag right side out. Fold top down about a half of an inch. Top stitch around the top edge using a 3.5 stitch length. The tiny clips will keep the top even while you sew. Remove just before sewing.

  1. Thank for these simple and very clear instructions. Even I can follow them!
I will be off to make a bag asap!!

  2. This is AWESOME! I’m so late to the sewing party. I can’t sew AT ALL but would love to have this for my 4 yr old. Are you in the market to sell one? She would draw for days on this bag. She loves drawing! This will make helping in the kitchen even more fun when we make lunches.

  3. Just found this site. My daughter wanted a lunch bag for work. So I made it with blue and white toile, lined it with coordinating blue and accented it with a silver antique button and silver chain for a handle. Thanks so much for the pattern and excellent directions. Saw one pattern before and it was confusing I just decided not to try. So thanks to you I can make a beautiful bag for my daughter!

  4. Just curious, where did you get your chalk markers? There are so many different kinds, that I wasn’t sure where you got yours? Also, the chalk on the bag.. do you just wipe away with a wet wash cloth or? Cute tutorial!! 🙂

  5. Cindy, this is absolutely precious!! You did a fabulous job on it! I bet she seriously loves it! Thanks for sharing how to make this!

My readers would adore this! I’d love it if you linked this up over at Living Well Spending Less for Thrifty livingwellspendingless.com/category/thrifty-thursday/

  6. Oops! Never mind about the cut corners comment. The bag appeared in the picture to have been cut off on the left edge and I thought it needed to be cut, but it was just how the picture was cropped. For some reason, I didn’t think the same about the right side. lol

  7. Cute idea. I’d never heard of chalk cloth before. The only step missing is cutting the corners before bringing them together. The 1st pic shows square edges, but picture #2 shows them cut. It would be good to know how much to cut off, but I’ll figure it out.

  8. This will surely make lunch fun! Love my favorite little model! Have a great 3rd grade year, Bella! Can’t wait to see YOUR doodles on this bag!

  9. I guess my question is how well does it keep the food inside of it cold? You’d have to use an ice pack in it, right?

  10. That will be such a useful bag for many things plus the insulation factor from the weather.
