Hi, everybody! I’m Gwen, and I blog over at Gwenny Penny, where you’ll find me sewing all kinds of things for my two little girls and my home. I’m so happy to be here sharing a holiday sewing tutorial with you today. This is a super cute project that comes together really quickly. Ready to check it out?

These little linen stockings are the perfect size to hold a gift card, some cash, or a little note. They also work nicely as a gift topper or make a cute little present on their own. Let’s get started!

Materials:

  • linen (approximately 8″ x 12″ piece)
  • scraps of red felt
  • 3/4″ button
  • 6″ of ric rac
  • needle and thread

Instructions:

Step 1: Download the stocking and poinsettia template HERE. Print the template at 100% (no scaling, do not “fit to page”). Cut two stocking pieces from your linen. Cut two poinsettia pieces from your felt. Set the felt flower pieces aside.

Step 2: Take one stocking piece and fold the top edge down 1/4″. Press. Turn the edge over another 1/4″ and press again. Pin to hold. Take your other stocking piece and repeat with the top edge, making sure that you are folding to the opposite side on the second piece (see picture below).

Sew across the top of each stocking piece, approximately 1/8″ up from the bottom of the fold.

Step 3: Take your stocking pieces and place them right sides together. Pin together. Slowly sew around the stocking using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Do not sew across the top of the stocking.

Step 4: Clip into the curves of the seam allowance, or cut around your seam allowance using pinking shears. Turn the stocking right side out. Press.

Step 5: Now it’s time to embellish! Grab your felt flower pieces, button, and ric rac.

Fold your 6″ piece of ric rac in half and sandwich it around the seam allowance just inside the top of your stocking. Handstitch in place. Take your felt poinsettia pieces and layer them on top of each other. Sew your button in the center of the flower.

Handstitch the poinsettia onto your stocking, and you’re done!

There are so many ways you can use these little stockings… String a whole bunch of them together on the mantel. Use them as place cards at the table. Use them to hold flatware at each place setting. I can’t wait to hang this on our tree this year, and I have a feeling I’ll be making several more before this holiday season is over.

Thanks so much to Cindy for inviting me to be a part of this series. Come visit me anytime at Gwenny Penny. Happy Holidays!
