Hi Skip to My Lou readers! I am so very excited to be posting over here for the annual Bake, Craft, Sew extravaganza! My name is Caroline and I blog over at Sew Caroline about living creatively, sewing/crafting/baking, and living as a newlywed in Texas with my husband and our cutie patootie new pup!
Today I’m really excited to share with you all a little tutorial on how to make the perfect ruffly apron to wear while baking your apple pies & roasting a turkey. Aprons are a southern thing, y’all, but I promise you can rock one too– especially one this cute!
What you need:
1/2 yard of fabric for the backing
1/2 yard of fabric for the tie
1/4 yard of fabric of 6 different fabrics (for ruffles)
(optional) 3/4 yard of pom pom trim
scissors//rotary cutter
sewing machine
(optional) ruffler foot
straight pins
Step ONE:
Choose your beautiful fabrics and cut them out according to the graphic below
straps: cut 2- 8″xWOF (width of fabric, ~44″)//backing: cut 1- 20″x 14″ & cut 1- 20″ x 15″ (I used muslin for the backing)//ruffles: cut 6- 8″xWOF (width of fabric, ~44″)
Step TWO:
When you have it all cut out, we’ll start ruffling. Start by pressing your ruffle fabric length wise (creating a 44″x4″ strip). Use your ruffler attachment or go old school & turn your stitch length to its longest length & pull the bobbin thread to create a ruffle.
Repeat this for all six ruffle pieces.
Step THREE:
Attach your ruffles! Start with the bottom ruffle and pin & sew it about one inch from the bottom of your backing fabric (the 20″x14″ piece). After the bottom ruffle is attached, measure up 1.5″ from the seam and pin & sew your next ruffle.
Continue this until all of your ruffles are attached.
