Stepping stones are a great way to add some useful character to your backyard. Let children join in the fun of making their own DIY stepping stones.

Grab a bag of concrete and some plastic pot saucers from your local Lowe’s. You will also need some rock, shells or mosaic tiles. We found our decorative mosaic tiles at Michaels. Mix the concrete according to package directions. We had to guess how much we needed for our three stepping stones (about 1/3 of an 80lb bag). We added water to the concrete until it looked like a really thick milk shake. Once mixed immediately pour into the plastic saucers.

Now for the fun part! Wait about five minutes and then press pieces of glass, tile, shells or rocks into the concrete. Water will start to settle on the top of the concrete. It may be blotted up with a paper towel if you like.

Kids will have fun making their own designs and will be so proud when they see their stepping stones right in their own yard.

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve those sweet feet and hands!

When concrete is dry and hard remove the stepping stone from the plastic saucer. Allow stone to completely dry before using. Be sure to check package directions for curing time of the concrete.

Would you like to add some fun to your backyard?

Disclosure: Lowe’s provided me with a gift card for supplies.

  1. I love the garden stones ! I could probably do this with my grand-children and put all their little foot prints in my garden !
    I love Lowes !!!!

  2. What a fabulous idea! My boys would go crazy for that!! Thanks for the chance.

  3. I like the mosaic stepping stone. I have a mosaic stone that was made at a camp my late daughter went to every year. After she passed away I had a reason to be on the campgrounds again. I saw the stone there and now have it in my yard. It makes me smile.

  4. I love this idea! A few years ago my husband accidentally stepped on his mom’s “bless this house” stepping stone and broke it in half. And worst of all she left it in the same spot at the bottom of her front steps so we are reminded of the accident each time we visit! I’m going to share this with my husband and sister in law, and maybe we can make steps from all the grandkids. 🙂

  5. What a fun idea!! Bella’s footprint is my favorite!! That’s a great way to see how she grows each year!! I’ll have to put this on my “to do when I’m a grandmother” list!!!love your blog!! =]
