Notes:

  • You can substitute butter for the coconut oil, however the coconut oil gives the more ‘real’ Magic Shell flavor.
  • You can use milk chocolate chips, but everyone we served preferred the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • This homemade magic shell is great to keep on hand for a last minute dessert for unexpected guests.

  1. you can also melt 1 cup chocolate chips with a couple tablespoon of peanut butter, it works the same way…so yummy!!!

  2. Love this recipe !! Only question is can you use Coconut oil that is not in a solid format ? I live in Australia and the only non-hydrogenated coconut oil I can find is one that is cold pressed and is liquid in a bottle like Olive Oil. If anyone has any input that would be great 🙂

  3. What a wonderful idea! And I love that it’s dairy-free! Definitely want to try this. 🙂

  4. regular magic shell isnt actually refrigerated. youre supposed to leave it out of the fridge so you dont have to refrigerate it because then it hardens.

  5. Just Pinned this. So cool! Thanks for sharing!

  6. I was planning on posting a magic shell recipe when I write my post about coconut oil, but I think instead, I’ll just link to yours. Is it ok for me to use your photo and give you credit?

  7. I found my coconut oil in the vitamin section of Walmart near the pharmacy. It is just plain coconut oil. It says to avoid excessive heat and refrigerate after opening. I don’t think the small amount of time in the microwave or double broiler is excessive. Since it says refrigerate after opening, I am sticking the liquid form in the fridge to measure it out for the recipe and then keeping the magic shell in the fridge after it’s made. Thanks for the great recipe!!

  8. YUM! Can’t wait to try :).

Just checked the bottle of Magic Shell in my cupboard and it says DO NOT REFRIGERATE… so I guess we’re good to just store at room temperature.
