Pour into a bottle. We used a recycled pickle relish bottle. A glass bottle works well too, especially since it will be heated in the microwave.

Notes:

  • You can substitute butter for the coconut oil, however the coconut oil gives the more ‘real’ Magic Shell flavor.
  • You can use milk chocolate chips, but everyone we served preferred the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • This homemade magic shell is great to keep on hand for a last minute dessert for unexpected guests.

  1. Thanks for posting! My husband loves this stuff and I never dreamed I could make it at home. How simple! Thanks for sharing.

  2. This sounds wonderful! I already have the coconut oil and chocolate chips, now I’ve get to go get some ice cream. Thanks for the recipe!

  3. I’m excited to try this recipe. Although, when I went to the store today, I couldn’t find Coconut Oil. Where did you buy yours?

  4. I agree, it probably doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge now that I think about it. I think real Magic Shell says to refrigerate after opening but I am not sure. I will check!

  5. Jami,

    There is no coconut flavor!
Really, it tastes just like a chocolate dipped cone from Dairy Queen.

  6. Darby, you can refrigerate to bring it back to a solid (It won’t take long).

Yes, mine is liquid during the summer and solid in the winter when kept in my cabinet.

  7. Really it probably doesn’t need to be refrigerated?? When you buy coconut oil and chocolate chips they are both on the shelf at the grocery store.

I don’t think heating and cooling is going to affect anything— I promise you won’t have it around that long!!

I don’t see why it couldn’t be melted in a double broiler. If you kept the magic shell in your cabinet instead of the refrigerator I think it could be heated by soaking bottle in hot water. If it has been in the refrigerator and the bottle is glass it could be heated in a pan of water on the stove.

I would check the expiration date on the coconut oil and the chocolate chips and not it keep it any longer that the earliest expiration date. Again, I don’t think you will have to worry about this because it will get gobbled up quickly!

  8. I, too, like Elaine’s remark earlier, would like to know how many times you can heat, then restore, then heat, etc. Also, could you tell us how long it will keep in the fridge???

  9. What a great use for Coconut oil! We made a half batch last night and it was perfect for 4 of us with just enough left over for Mom the next day (shhhh!)

  10. I bought LouAna Coconut oil and mine is not solid, its a liquid. I live in the desert, so..how do I measure this? Can I refrigerate it to make it a solid?

  11. This is the neetest recipe I’ve seen today. I go nuts for cones rolled in chocolate and nuts. I’m heading to the sper market to find coconut oil!

  12. HEY!
And guess what? This is a great gluten-free recipe. Now I am going over to of my favorite gluten free blogs and direct them to this recipe. Thanks!

  13. This looks fantastic!!! I do wonder though, does it taste like coconut at all? We’re not coconut fans in our house… Or does it just give it the right consistency? I L-O-V-E! finding out ways to make something store bought homemade! Thanks so much for sharing 😀

  14. Thank you so much! I just made a batch and it works just like I remember. My kids are going to love this snack for our family movie night tonight.

  15. Sounds heavenly!

But…um…there’s a lot of us that no longer use microwaves. Would be great to have a non-microwave option included in the recipe 🙂

    Blessings…
