I love the colors and patterns of vintage hankies. I have my grandmother’s hankies and am always thinking of ways to use them without cutting them (I don’t know why that bothers me!). So here is a way to use them to wear them! Make them into a beautiful scarf! This handkerchief scarf would make a lovely handmade Mother’s Day gift!

Find 6 or so handkerchief scarfs that are the same with. This did take some effort and I had to supplement with some handkerchiefs I found at an antique store. They usually cost less than $2.00.

Sew the handkerchiefs right sides together. Sew as close to the rolled hem of the handkerchiefs as you can.

Now you have a fun new accessory or a beautiful handmade gift!

You can also make these adorable handkerchief lavendar sachets with vintage handkerchiefs. They make such a beautiful yet calming gift!

  1. i can’t stop thinking about this! when my grandmother died, i snagged all of her ancient handkerchiefs and i’ve been trying to figure out what to do with them. this is a great idea but most of hers are not really pretty like this. they are mostly white with some embroidery. i’ll have to go through them now and see if there’s some that i can find to do this.

  2. This is absolutely beautiful! My mother in law has given my daughter quite a few hankies over the years, whe might like to do this with them.

  3. Cindy, I am in love with this scarf. Such a simple way to make a statement.I don’t know where I am going to find such lovely scarves, but I am on a mission.

  4. This is lovely! I will be keeping an eye out for especially colorful handkerchiefs at yard sales this summer.

  5. I have several severely damaged hankies and scarves, which I want to use in a project. It’s a shame to throw the whole thing away because it has a big ink stain on one end, etc. I am thinking I ought to do a variation on this, to keep the parts that are still in good shape. I do agree with you, though. I hate cutting up vintage scarves and hankies! That’s probably why I haven’t done anything about it yet.

This is a cute idea! 🙂
