I have always wanted one of those special appliances for making those thin crispy cookies perfect for ice cream cones and edible bowls. I found one at my local Gourmet Shop and I am in love!

I used a Krumkake machine from Chef’s Choice (Kitchen Gallery has more if you live locally, if not you can find them here).

Whip up this simple batter straight from the included recipe book:

Favorite German Krumkake Recipe

2/3 cup water

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 – 1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup flour

1 egg

Boil the water. While it is cooling, add 1/4 cup butter to water and stir to melt the butter completely. Add 1/2 cup of sugar to the the water while still warm and stir to dissolve. Allow to cool.

Add one cup of flour and 1 egg to water mixture. Mix thoroughly while adding vanilla. Makes about a dozen cones or bowls. Use about 2 tablespoons per krumkake.

Pour batter on the heated griddle.

Close lid and cook about 90 seconds.

I wanted to made edible bowls so I found two bowl shaped items, one that fit inside the other. While the Krumkake is still piping hot place in the bowl.

Allow to cool slightly and remove.

I love these bowls!

It also came with a tool to make cones.

So cool!

  1. Hello~

I’m just catching up on a 3 wk. absence (2 wk- vacation; 1 wk- catch-up from vacation!!) of your posts!

This is very, very cool indeed. My husband is a fantastic ice cream maker and this would make a perfect gift for him this November. I just added it to my Amazon wish list- as a reminder! And I love another commenter’s suggestion about giving them as gifts! Waffle bowls, plus ice cream toppings would be a great summer gift! A little hard to package, but worth the effort:).

  2. Hi Cindy I found my way here from Blogfrog…these sure look yummy.
We are in winter in Australia but summer will return.

I’m thinking a airtight box of these would make a great christmas gift.
maybe with a list of filling suggestions.

Im off to look around a bit more.

  3. It’s breakfast time here in Australia. Is it to early to make these with ice cream and chocolate sauce. I am the mother surely I get to say a big NO it’s never to early!! Off to the kitchen I go.

  4. Yes, Krumkake is Norwegian! The recipe that came with the machine said “Favorite German Krumkake Recipe.” I think they are showing that it is a popular treat enjoyed by many!

  5. I think you could make these without a waffle cone maker by just spreading a thin layer of batter on a nonstick pan and cooking like a pancake.

  6. Wow, these look delicious!
I don’t have a griddle, but would just a frying pan work? Wouldn’t be as pretty, but could still be yummy

  7. Krumkake is indeed delicious, but it’s Norwegian, not German. I can attest to this because my Norwegian grandmother made it and my German grandmother never heard of it.

  8. oh boy! delish! I wish I had more kitchen space for more gadgets. That would be on my list!
