How to make red white and blue cupcakes
I used LorAnn Professional Liquid Food Coloring and a basic white cake mix.
Mix the cake following directions. Divide the batter into three bowls (about 1 1/2 cups each). Add red and blue food coloring. I added about 30 drops of blue and 40 drops of red.
Fill cupcake liners with batter. I layered red, white, and then blue batter. I added a touch of red batter on the top of some.
Bake according to directions on cake mix.
You will have gorgeous red white and blue cupcakes.
Make your red white and blue cupcakes extra special by topping them with a candy star and sprinkles.
Here is How to make candy star cupcake stoppers
Melt about 30 – 40 candy coating disks slowly in the microwave. The candy must be melted low and slow. This will help the candy coating release from the mold and remain shiny. Melt at 15-second intervals, stirring in between intervals.
Place melted candy coating in a zip-lock bag or pastry bag and snip off the bottom corner of the bag.
Fill a star chocolate mold with candy coating. Tap mold firmly several times on a flat surface to remove any air bubbles.
If you don’t have a mold you can draw a small star shape onto parchment paper using the bag filled with melted candy, Once the candy is completely cool and hard, gently remove from the paper and place on cupcakes.
TIP: If not using a mold, hand draw a page of stars or print a page of stars and place the sheet under a piece of waxed paper so you can see the printed stars and use them as a guide while you squeeze the candy into star shapes.
Allow candy coating to completely harden. It can be placed in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes or 5 minutes in the freezer to speed up the process. Turn the mold over and tap the mold firmly against a hard surface to release the candies. Candies should come out easily, if they don’t, place back into the freezer for a few minutes.
Frost cupcakes, add some sprinkles and the candy star cupcake toppers and you are ready to celebrate!

I love these and the fact that you used a polish pottery bowl makes it that much better
These are so cute. I love them!!!
These are beautiful!! Thank you so much for sharing. I will be doing something close to this for my sons 2nd party! Thanks for the great idea!
i just love how cheerful these rainbow cupcakes look when you bite into them! I saw that you used a cake mix… hmmm… I am still intimidated by my oven (LOL) and seeing you use a cake mix instead of making your own from scratch relieves me of the pressure to make my first cupcake from base ingredients. 😛 thank you! The colors just inspire me and make me feel real happy! 🙂
I will be making these! So cute and a big hit with the kids. Thanks for the idea.
So cute! Now I hope someone invites me over on the Fourth so that I can bring these!
How fun! I did some like that last year, but I like your star lots better! I’m looking forward to your store opening so I can buy some of that coloring!
Thanks for sharing!
~Liz
LOVE these! Cute! Cute! Cute!
Ohhh Cindy Lou….I’m soo glad you are my friend. It’s amazing what I can learn from you, even though you adapted my recipe!! You are a rockstar!! And you have shiny bright white teeth too! 🙂
The icing is just plain frosting from the can. I piped it on the cupcake with a plain tip (sorry no number but the opening is about 1/2″). Yes, the food coloring was from a speciality store— but you will be in luck soon, because I am opening Sweet! Baking and Candy Making Supply and you will be able to find all of these goodies!
These look SO yummy! My mouth is watering just thinking of sinking my teeth into them!
🙂
Gotta love Ms. Angry Julie and her inspiration! Love your RW&B cupcakes too … betcha those won’t last long at a picnic! Have a super-duper weekend ~j.
Awesome! Love ’em!
