This machine has been getting a workout…

snowcone2To make your own homemade syrup for snow cones you only need sugar, water and this

snowcone3Snow Cone Syrup Recipe

2 cups sugar

1 cup water

1 .22 ounce unsweetened powder drink mix

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then immediately remove from heat.  Don’t allow it to boil or you will make hard candy! Allow to cool. We used a funnel to put syrup into a recycled bottle.

Pour syrup over shaved ice (our machine makes great soft shaved ice) and enjoy!

snowcone5I know I know, this is not healthy and I am one of those moms that won’t buy sugared cereal—- sorry I am a bit of a hypocrite (especially since I feed my kids this too)! Snow cones are definitely a treat, one we love! Making the snow cone syrup yourself is so much cheaper than buying the flavored syrup from the store and it tastes better.

Those Kool Aid packets are actually quite versatile! Did you know they can be used to make hair dye? Learn how to dye your hair with Kool Aid. It would be another fun kids activity.

  1. I wouldn’t worry so much about the sugar, but the artificial colours and dyes can be a killer—literally! Derived from petroleum, they are known carcinogens, but what you might not know is their link to hyperactivity in children. So many parents think it’s the sugar they’re feeding their kids that makes them bounce off the walls, but it’s really the artificials. Lest you think I’m a stick in the mud, not letting kids have snow cones, there are lots of flavourful, non-carcinogenic, natural ways to make colourful treats. For more information on the link between artificials and kids’ behaviour, consult http://www.feingold.org.

  2. You can also make it with a sugar substitute. I made mine with sweet and low and it was awesome! Not sure how kid friendly that is, but I think splenda is kid friendly.

  3. Wow! We just made a batch and just had THE BEST snowcone (according to my 4yr old grandson). Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  4. cannot thank you enough for saving the day. I went to 4 stores tonight looking for syryup. It’s my son’s lasy day of preschool tomorrow and I told him I would make snowcones for his class. Well no luck and then right there in the last store I figured their had to be a recipe online and voila there you were. Srups made and ready for the big day. And it tastes good too! Of course I had to taste test 😉

  5. thanks for the idea I have tried to find it in stores and needed it for my duaghters school being a seasonal item no one had it . thanks for the help it made the carnvial a success

  6. Thank you so much for posting this! We realized that the store bought syrup is a seasonal item and the stores have quit carrying it. We have a similar maching and, living in California, love our snow cones almost year round – at least to Thanksgiving! Thanks again – you saved the day.

  7. Great idea – thnanks for sharing! I’ll try it this week in prep for our sno-cone stand. Here in New Hampshire we sometimes make them with maple syrup – a nice healthy alternative. It takes after a tradition called “sugar on snow.” When the first batch of maple syrup is finished in the spring, we pour hot, thickened syrup on a pan of snow and it makes a toffee-like candy. We serve it with a doughnut and a dill pickle!

More healthy ideas – could probably make the syrup with honey, and add natural flavoring.

Oh – and have you tried adding a creamy flavor with some watered-down condensed milk? Could probably make that, too. Yum!

  8. Wow! I was participating in a mission trip in which it was my responsibility to travel to 7 public parks and make sno cones for children participating in Bible clubs. I ran out of bought syrup and nearly panicked. After searching stores frantically I realized there must be a recipe. Wa – la ! I used the recipe and lots of children were happy! I’ve made 8 gallons in two days. Fun! Fun!

  9. WOW! I never knew! Thanks for the yummy info, now we can make our own refreshing and delicious treats at home.
