This machine has been getting a workout...
because we have been eating tons of these!
To make your own homemade syrup for snow cones you only need sugar, water and this
Snow Cone Syrup Recipe
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 .22 ounce unsweetened powder drink mix
Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then immediately remove from heat. Allow to cool. We used a funnel to put syrup into a recycled bottle.
Pour syrup over shaved ice (our machine makes great soft shaved ice) and enjoy!
I know I know, this is not healthy and I am one of those moms that won't buy sugared cereal---- sorry I am a bit of a hypocrite (especially since I feed my kids this too)! Snow cones are definitely a treat, one we love! Making the snow cone syrup yourself is so much cheaper than buying the flavored syrup from the store and it tastes better.
Wouldn't these Reusable Silicone Snow Cone Cups be handy!

I use fruit juice for the ocassional treat. The coloring is at least natural, but you still have the sugar (albeit natural sugar) stigma. With all things parenting, it’s pick your poison, right?
Thanks for the recipe! Its way cheaper than regular syrup. You are such a fun mom.
I am SOOOO excited to try this!!!
Well, we must do what we have to to stay cool in the summer. And you’re only a kid once, they’ll remember these fun times.
So EXCITED! We have the exact same machine and ours gets a work out at least twice a day in the AZ heat! (nothing wrong with a little shaved ice at 9:30 in the morning!) Our counters look like a water and ice store with all the syrups we have! Thanks for the awesome tip, I can’t wait to try it!
my kids would luv this
Oh I love this idea and am going to go buy one of the ice machines today. This would be perfect to serve the kids outside when they are swiming and want a little break.
I never knew how to make the syrups before so thank you.
Joanne
What a great idea! We have so many of those Kool-Aid packets that we’ll have plenty of flavors from which to chose. Not to mention that we’ve been meaning to break out the snow cone machine. Thanks for the reminder!
Wonderful idea! Thanks!
And I don’t think you’re a hypocrite at all – it’s one thing to devote an entire meal (breakfast) to sugary shapes doused in milk, and another to supplement a meal with a nice cold treat. Makes perfect sense to me (also, I love my cold treats too, so I’m kind of defending my own position as well)!
My kids will love this. Thanks for sharing
I am so doing this! Those syrups are expensive…love it…thank you!
I made this with the kids yesterday they loved it. Thanks for sharing.
That sounds really good! We love snowcones here too!
This is a great one! I am really excited to try it out. Thanks for the tip.
I will be doing this tomorrow!
I got a group of kids coming tomorrow! Guess what I am doing!!!! Thanks1 I linked to this at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I tried it the other day and it works like a charm…the kids LOVED them!
Made some grape ones today…LOVE IT! It really works…thanks you saved me a bunch of money on those syrups. I want to have a sno-cone party now
I used this recipe yesterday to make the syrup , works great ,kids loved it , it was so hard for them to wait , I should have made it in the evening and let it cool overnight , BIG HIT >
thanks
WOW! I never knew! Thanks for the yummy info, now we can make our own refreshing and delicious treats at home.
Wow! I was participating in a mission trip in which it was my responsibility to travel to 7 public parks and make sno cones for children participating in Bible clubs. I ran out of bought syrup and nearly panicked. After searching stores frantically I realized there must be a recipe. Wa – la ! I used the recipe and lots of children were happy! I’ve made 8 gallons in two days. Fun! Fun!
Wow …. what a $$ saver. I made 3 batches today. Very yummy!!
Great idea – thnanks for sharing! I’ll try it this week in prep for our sno-cone stand. Here in New Hampshire we sometimes make them with maple syrup – a nice healthy alternative. It takes after a tradition called “sugar on snow.” When the first batch of maple syrup is finished in the spring, we pour hot, thickened syrup on a pan of snow and it makes a toffee-like candy. We serve it with a doughnut and a dill pickle!
More healthy ideas – could probably make the syrup with honey, and add natural flavoring.
Oh – and have you tried adding a creamy flavor with some watered-down condensed milk? Could probably make that, too. Yum!
Thank you so much for posting this! We realized that the store bought syrup is a seasonal item and the stores have quit carrying it. We have a similar maching and, living in California, love our snow cones almost year round – at least to Thanksgiving! Thanks again – you saved the day.
thanks for the idea I have tried to find it in stores and needed it for my duaghters school being a seasonal item no one had it . thanks for the help it made the carnvial a success
