A little girl’s purse – a project for big and little girls to make together!

A

Leigh Ann from the object project is sharing a quick and easy way to make a darling purse for a little girl (or with just the right fabric could be a fun night out clutch for us big girls).

I wanted to post a quick little project that mothers and daughters can make together!

A

My daughter, Audrey, is four years old. She and I often make things together. Audrey calls our creative time together our "craft show" because she likes to pretend we're being filmed in front of an audience! We must explain each step of our project in detail to the "camera". We even take "commercial breaks" to fit in some popscicle time! I really think she's destined to be the next great HGTV or DIY host!

A

Take a few minutes with your daughter (or grand-daughter, or niece) to make this sweet little purse she'll love to tote around. And let her pitch in to the extent her skills (and attention span) will allow!

A

What you'll need...

A

One fat quarter of fabric, two plastic bracelets, scissors or rotary cutter and mat, needle and thread, buttons for decoration is desired.  You'll be using a DVD for your pattern!

A

1. Let your daughter pick out her favorite DVD to use for the project. Fold your fat quarter in half.  Open the DVD and lay it on the fold of the fabric and cut around it. If your daughter is old enough to use scissors, you can trace around the DVD and let her cut the shape out.

001

2. Open the piece and lay it flat. Fold down about 1" on the top and the bottom and press.

003

3. Fold in half again, right sides facing this time, and press. Sew from the fold up to about 1.5" from the top (before you get to the fold). You may want to stop 2" or 3" from the top, depending on how big your little one's hands are. Repeat on the other side. If she knows how to use the sewing machine, let your daughter have a go at the 2 seams!

004

4. Turn the bag right side out. Take one of the plastic bracelets and place it under the top fold. Handstitch the bracelet into the fold, gathering the fabric around the bracelet as you go. Repeat on the other side.

5. Add buttons or ribbon to embellish the purse if desired. Let your daughter stuff it with her treasures!

This is Audrey modeling her new purse (and her mango smoothie).

You might want to make a matching headband or corsage. Leigh Ann tells you how with more clever tutorials.  She also has some patterns for sale at her shop, Strawberry Truffle.  Thanks Leigh Ann!

Wow that is darling. I actually want it for myself!! And I already have a couple clear plastic “bracelets” that I have saved from buying neck-scarves recently – I knew they’d come in handy. I think I could also ribbon-wrap the clear plastic bracelets with a coordinating color. Thanks for the great idea!!

  10. Jenn says:

Beans and I have to do this one- camera production, commercial breaks and all.

  11. Tara B says:

What a lucky girl to have you to make such a wonderful purse. That’s a great project! Stop by & say “hi” soon. If you like what you see, be sure to click the “Follow” button on the right. Be sure to take a look around the boutique by just clicking on the Gold Frame of Porcelain roses on the upper right hand column. Enjoy your time there & stop by as often as you like!

  13. LiEr says:

Genius! Can’t wait to try it. Can’t believe I’m confessing this to all and sundry but I actually have some Disney princess-print satin that would be perfect for this! Thank you!

  14. Katie R. says:

THANK YOU! You have just solved a HUGE problem for me! These are PERFECT for making for my various nieces for (ahem) extremely late Christmas presents. I had decided to make dolls for each and every one of them, but the task has been very daunting, which has held up the whole sending things off deal…I can whip off several of these and save the dolls for next year! Thanks again!

  15. What a great idea! I will definitely be trying this out!

  16. Jackie V says:

How cute!! It looks super easy too. I aspire to be crafty but I’m not so easy works. My dd would love this.

  17. Kate says:

    These are great!

  18. That is so very cute! I had to tweet :D

  19. goddessence says:

    That is adorable!!!

We have been making a similar bag for adults using those bamboo rings that can be bought in craft supply stores.

We made some for the kids but the bamboo rings were too big for them…the bracelet idea completely solves that problem.

Great idea!!! Thanks for sharing :)

  20. Tricia says:

Cute purse, but I had to say: see Ladybug Girl, that book in the background? It’s a great book! Everyone should check it out of the library and read it to your children. (Also get Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy while you’re at it!)

  21. Henrietta says:

What an adorable little purse! I would have never thought to use bracelets, we have lots of those and my 8 year old will love to make one! Thanks for sharing :)

  22. Ok, I might actually be able to do that! What a cute project!

  23. Caroline says:

Oh, drats! I have all boys!! LOL!! My next door neighbors are the sweetest people I know. They babysit their granddaughter who is 5 – I will HAVE to make this for her. Then I’ll be cool!! I LOVE being cool! :)

    Thanks!!
    Caroline

  24. Natalie Joy says:

What a great idea. My 6 (almost 7 year old) LOVES to play “Cooking Show” as she helps me prep dinner. And, we love to sew together. She is just beginning to use the rotary cutter (which makes me uber nervous, but she has to learn somehwere). I also let her push the pedal for the sewing machine. We will love making this purse together. We have a ton of little girl birthdays coming up as well. We might even make these up for birthday presents. Thanks for the great idea!!

  25. Natalie says:

So doing this project this weekend. We’re going to have a bunch of rain, so this will be perfect AND I already have everything on the list!!!

  26. Mandy says:

Augh! LOVE this! Sheesh, I really need a girl. :) Thanks for the tute!

  27. thank you for the idea! i made it yesterday for my niece’s 4th birthday. i think i may add the headband!

  28. Betty says:

SUPER!!!! I bought 2 packages of bracelets today at the $1.00 Store and am just finishing up one of these cute purses for my Granddaughter. So fun and so easy! I’m thinking of making one abit bigger for my on-the-go knitting projects! Thanks so much for sharing this novel idea!

  29. ♥Rocío♥ says:

How cute is that? I love it!!! My girl said “I want one for each dress”… it is a great idea for My Princess Birthday Party(which is this Friday)…I can put a bunch of goodies and candy in it and give them away to all the girls @ her party!
    Thanks for sharing!

I’m all late and whatnot, but thank you for posting this. I have a 5-year-old and I think she’ll love to help me with this. She is always wanting to have a little purse to mimic me, so this will be great for her. Again, thank you!
