Happy Kansas Day

Today we are celebrating the 146th Kansas Day. Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861. My son and I will spend the morning at the Kansas Historical Museum. If you would like to help Kansas celebrate and learn a little more about this fine state here is a sunflower coloring sheet, a Western Meadowlark, and a buffalo. Here is a sheet about our state symbols. You can even make your own Kansas flag.

I made this simple cake for my son’s class. The center is a chocolate cake made in a small cake pan or heat proof bowl. The petals are Twinkies–as many as you need for the kids. We added some chocolate chips to the frosted center, but you could also use chocolate sprinkles.

Leave a comment to this post and my son and I will pick one person to recieve some Kansas goodies. We will notify the lucky person by e-mail.

What a Cute Cake! My 6 yo DD has a state flower coloring book she just loves.I can see her wanting to do a cake & clebrate each state’s B-day. I’ll be sharing the Kansas info with all 3 of my kids-thanks for sharing.

Oh how I loved Kansas Day in elementry school! I remember making a Kansas board game in 5th grade that was a mix of Candy Land and Trivial Persuit. (I bet my mom still has it). Here is a bit of trivia that is little known: The Kansas motto: “Ad Astra per Aspera” is latin for what?

The cake looks delicious, maybe I will make one for my co-workers so they will have a little knowledge of my fine “home” state.

Kansas Day was also Skip to My Lou’s grandfather’s birthday. When he was a school principal he told his students that all the Kansas flags were flying because it was his birthday. He would have been 105 on the 29th.

kansas day! how lovely! my only brush with kansas was an unfortunate one involving a broken-down airplane, a deserted airport, and a hungry me. here’s to better kansas-time in the future!

What a fabulous idea. My daughters name is Edelweiss and I had been trying to think of a simple way to make her an Edelweiss cake. I think I might try this and make the center cake a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and yellow coconut shreds to embelish. It is perfect for her to bring to preschool. Thanks for sharing.

Cute cake! For another fun treat, make KS Day Trail Mix: Sunflower seeds, Meadowlark’s nests (cheerios), Buffalo droppings (choc. chips), Cottonwood leaves (Sunny Seed Drops), Yellow Brick Road Bits (Toffee /Heath chunks). Happy 148th, Kansas!

Great Idea! I work in a Special Ed Preschool classroom and I am always looking for new and fun ideas to do with my preschoolers. I will definitely use this idea. However I would make a slight change, instead of using the full Twinkie I would cut it in half and use ½ of the Twinkie. This way I can make two cakes. I have an A.M. session (18 students) and a P.M. session (23 students) doing this will save me some money and I think it will still look great. Thanks for the great idea!

I want Twinkies…I hear about them but have never seen one. If I had some Id copy your cake, it is very cute.
We dont have Twinkies in Australia, but I really wish I could taste one. I wonder if they taste like I imagine them and if they have the texture I imagine..hmmm

There are no buffalo in the United States let alone Kansas. They are bison and not buffalo. True buffalo are only found in Asia.
